Overview:
"In my opinion the best mech ever made, walk up to the enemy shoot it with the
PPC's and when close enough switch to the autocannon until they stop moving."

Cpt Diana Belmont, 2678.

Capabilities:
Meant to operate alongside other heavy mechs such as the Warhammer and the
Archer, the Ajax was reserved for SLDF Royal Dragoon regiments, it was often
sent into the line to deal with enemy assault mechs. In order to do so, the
Ajax was heavily armed with a pair of PPC's to soften the enemy up at range,
and an AC/20 to deliver significant damage at close range. An almost
superflous medium and small laser were added for some extra short range
firepower.

Mounting 13 tons of armour, the Ajax was well protected for its class. CASE
added further protection from potentially devastating ammo explosions.

Twelve double-strength heat sinks gave the pilot many options as to which
weapons could be fired.

Battle History:
The Ajax performed adequately if properly supported by other units, backed up
by mechs such as the Archer, the Crusader and the Marauder and screened by
lighter elements such as the Dervish or the Shadow Hawk, the Ajax could pound
the slower assault mechs with a pair of PPC's until close enough to finish the
job with the autocannon.

Deployment:
The Ajax was too new to be released to the SLDF regular units in significant
numbers. Most remained loyal to Kerensky and accompanied him in exile.

The Clans made good use of the Ajax. Most Clan Toumans still have a number of
Ajaxes in their second-line units.

A long-lost design in the Inner Sphere, the mech was resurrected during the
Jihad and became a signature mech of the Republic.

Variants:
The AJX-4R replaces one PPC with a Large Laser and a pair of MG and a ton of
ammo. This makes for a more versatile mix of weapons, usually one in every
Ajax lance was thus equipped.

A field variant either replaces the 3R's PPC's with ER versions or the 4R's
Large Laser with an ER version. Nicknamed "Thermopylae" because of the high
heat generated by the ER PPC's, pilots were advised to alternate firing the
weapons to allow the mech to cool down.
