So...what should JMInc. Do next? What era? Maybe a Clan design? Particular specialty/role you want to see?

Cheap militia 'Mech. Cheap to buy, cheap to run, sturdy enough to be worth the money.

Mechs can't be cheap to run, not with all those moving parts...

What would you consider "cheap"?

I'm thinking probably a Medium, for a good balance of cost and durability.

60 ton militia mech, as the weight went over the planned tonnage due to some technical problem.

What do the rules say on maintenance, repair, fuel, and ammo costs?

If they use parts that other mechs use, such an NOT UNIQUE, then it drives down the cost. Energy weapons are expensive at first, but as long as they arent damaged, they dont cost alot like ammo weapons due. Some maitanence is required.
Hell the whole omni mech concept was good about that. The same medium laser went into everything that was built. NO need for specialty parts.
Standard engine, no advanced armor, or endo steel.
Jump jets and hand acutators would be required. They would be used for other things besides fighting when not being attacked. Probably not anywhere near 100 tons. Maybe not even in the assault class, but thats an iffy one.
maybe in the fluff talk about easy access for the maintanence crews.

The C-Bill costs for weapons need an overhaul. The whole purpose of autocannons(simpler to produce, cheaper), is negated by the fact that it's perks that it's supposed to have over energy weapons doesn't exist.(LB-X are often much more expensive than similar energy weapons, regular autocannons are often barely cheaper than PPCs, and that's before considering ammo costs.)
