P-38Ls hunt down the remainder of the resisting BF109s and FW190s. Mustangs fly over germany, uncontested. The Flying Fortresses inch closer and closer to the german capital, Berlin, who only have to worry about a couple AAA guns very far below.

At least, they used to.

Early 1945. A flight of 50 B-17s and escorting P-38s head to an oil rig close to Berlin. 12 B-17s and few Lightnings made it back.

"...No, they weren't that fast at all, our Lightnings could outrun them. But we couldn't stop them."
"They were slowly gaining on the B-17s flying in box formation. But they started firing and taking us out while we still thought we were safely out of the way."
"Our centerline large lasers hardly scratched them! Some poor bloke tried to take one head on. I hope to god his death was quick."

Development of the Swallow began mid-1944. The original aim was to create an interceptor fighter that could leave the atmosphere. The team created quite a bit more. The first Aerospace Fighter was born.

These fighters could be made much heavier thanks to the more powerful rocket engines, though they were more inefficient with their fuel. However, they were very inefficient with their handling of heat. They required heat sinks for even the most basic of weapons. At this point they only possessed single heat sinks as well, meaning their laser weapons just weren't an option.

German engineers got around this issue by using their low-heat Mk108 Autocannons, four of them to be exact. These autocannons spread a whole lot of dakka onto opponents at farther than average ranges, making them very effective bomber killers.

20.5 tons of standard armor makes the ASF practically immune to the normally devastating P-38L's LL weapon's crit causing ability, while it's autocannons in turn can turn any conventional fighter or bomber into mincemeat within fractions of seconds.
