Since we have rules now for three legged or tripod mechs, would it be likely that someone would experiment with putting six legs on a mech?

That would be pretty damn cool. I'd immediately make an AT-TE.

My thoughts too.

What would be the benefits of that? And would it force you to have a larger engine?

Haha yes!

The stability of a six legged mech would probably be superior to even that of a four legged mech.
And, though this may be less of a bonus, you'd get 4 more crits than a quad.

I didn't know how much the good would outweigh the bad with that sort of a change

Benefits: 1) Stability (piloting skill bonus to stay upright; fewer checks to fall when firing HGR; etc.) 2) Ability to walk with leg loss (probably can lose up to 3 legs without having real difficulties, unless they're on one side)
Suggested drawbacks: 1) Heavier internal structure for the extra limbs (+50%?), and/or 2) Possibly an engine penalty to handle moving the extra limbs (required rating x1.2, or something like that)
Other issues: 1) Sideways kicking from the middle legs, akin to a quad's mule kick? 2) Modifying hit location charts. Have fun with that.

Idk about the engine penalty, the sketchy Tripods which would at first seem simply awkward to pilot in the first place don't suffer that.

Almost enough changes to justify a completely new class of unit. I'd suggest:
1) Adding Rear Torso sections as completely distinct locations, to make up for lack of crit space in the limbs. 2) Distinct 3-hex firing arc for weapons in each location. 3) Unique movement rules...no facing changes required for movement.
This could be fun...

It would be slower in diagonal directions, I'd guess

That would depend...if the legs are fully articulated and evenly spaced around the body, there would be no practical "front", "back", or "sides" in terms of movement.

So it would never move in a direction, just spin in place?

No...the legs have full range of motion, kind of like a crab, allowing it to scuttle in any direction with equal ease.
