when dealing with a mech that uses lrms and ppcs for long range, having mls as a back up is never a bad idea. Even an erppc could use some help.

Agreed. Medium lasers also grant flexibility. You have the option of adjusting your firepower per turn in 3-heat packets.

The Warlord is an excellent example of medium laser flexibility. It carries 2 Heavy PPCs, 10 medium lasers, and 16 DHS. You can fire both heavy PPCs and almost monopolize your heat capacity; fire both heavy PPCs and push your heat a bit by firing several medium lasers, too; swap out a heavy PPC for a brace of medium lasers; or just turn into a medium laser spam machine.
