I'm not going to make this a design challenge because then I'd have to judge the results and I don't like doing that, I get too many sad-puppy faces from the losers. But I am taking submissions of design variants for the following scenario:

BACKGROUND: Poof! In a cloud of continuity-violating smoke (see p. 134 StratOps on time travel), a JumpShip performs a misjump and goes from early 3067 to early 3019, arriving at a pirate point over New Avalon. There are no survivors, the ship is horribly mangled, the attached DropShips are wrecked, no computers survive intact to be read, and the only useful material pulled from the wreckage consists of:

1) A magazine of sports statistics (3000-3050AD)**
2) A warning to Hanse Davion to wear condoms any time in the year 3032 he so much as has a lecherous thought, let alone touches his wife.
3) A partly salvageable 'Mech. From the 'Mech, the New Avalon Institute of Science is able to recover the technology for heavy PPC and light PPC, which is just a scaled up regular PPC with little in the way of fancy technology like the ER PPC posses, and CASE, which is just a metal box and blow-away panels.

Your submission, should you choose to participate, must adhere to the following rules:

1) It must be a plausible refit of an existing 3025-era BattleMech. The engines cannot be changed; HPPCs should only go in the place of existing large weapons; and other than HPPCs and CASE, you're stuck to 3025-era Inner Sphere tournament-legal gear.
2) The design must be based on an existing Federated Suns or Lyran Commonwealth 'Mech design that is in production in those factions.
3) The selected base design must be medium, heavy, or assault. [edit]
4) The design should represent an attempt by the AFFS or LCAF to sensibly utilize HPPCs (and CASE), understanding that the AFFS and LCAF hope to shift the course of 3rd Succession War but don't expect HPPCs and LPPCs to single-handedly win the war.

**The Federated Suns only learns of the magazine in 3025, when an AFFS spacer who retired abruptly in 3019 and became extremely rich betting on sports fails to pay his taxes and has his giant estate raided by the Federal Revenue & Customs Service.
Mike Miller, Materials Engineer

why can't davion be assault class? They do build the battlemaster.

and retry, when did the hammerhands get made? I never heard of one.

And from the feel of the design, it sounds like you need to basically field refit it into designs, ie the base model should have a ppc with it. Otherwise it would be good to put in on an atlas, or most anything else.

Ok, the TRO:3025 gave me enough info to answer my questions. Here we go...

Shadow Hawk SHD-2D(H)

Mass: 55 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E-A
Production Year: 3070
Cost: 4,688,957 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,269

Chassis: Unknown Standard
Power Plant: Unknown 275 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 54.0 km/h
Maximum Speed: 86.4 km/h
Jump Jets: Unknown
Jump Capacity: 90 meters
Armor: Unknown Standard Armor w/ CASE
Armament:
1 Heavy PPC
2 Medium Lasers
2 SRM-2s
Manufacturer: Unknown
Primary Factory: Unknown
Communications System: Unknown
Targeting and Tracking System: Unknown

Overview:
House Davion has a long history of tinkering with the Shadow Hawk: according to
the TRO:3025, they fielded primarily the -2D variant, which traded nearly half
its armour for additional weaponry. When fate dropped a new, powerful weapon
into their hands, the decided to try it out on their long-time workhorse.

Although the SHD's versatility in combat was much respected, 'Mechwarriors had
often complained that the 'Mech lacked punch at long range, so the Autocannon
was removed and the new Heavy PPC was fitted in its place. After repeated
attempts to get the 'Mech to balance properly in its new configuration, the
techs eventually chose to drop the LRM as well, which solved the balance
problems and also allowed the addition of two more very welcome Heat Sinks --
the outrageous heat output of the powerful weapon had been a rude shock. In a
rare moment of clear thinking, they also realized that 100 rounds of SRM ammo
was excessive, so the Left Torso ammo bin was removed, and the Right Torso was
fitted with the new CASE system to protect against ammo explosions (which
historically claimed more Shadow Hawks than actual weapon damage). The
remaining half ton was used to improve the leg and torso armour.

While a few pilots still insist that dropping one of the SRMs in favour of more
armour or increased Jump range would make the 'Mech much better, feedback of
the new -2D(H) variant is generally positive.

==Variants:==
Hanse Davion has attempted several interesting variations on the basic
Rifleman design, including replacing the autocannon with PPC. This model,
intended to compete with the heavier Warhammer, has severe overheating
problems, which have forced an increase in the number of heat sinks. Although
this variant is hardly a smashing success, Hanse Davion continues to tinker
with PPC-armed Riflemen. Davion has also been attempting to mount heavier
autocannons by sacrificing the heavy lasers and some of the Rifleman's armor.
This model shows promise, but has yet to be tested in battle.

There is a variant with AC/10's, but this when swapped still over heats like a mother but lacks the case requirement the OP stated. Maybe AC/10 and 1 Heavy PPC, never said the Riflemen needs to have the same weapon in either arm.

Like the Riflemen I suggested but on the Enforcer, one heavy PPC and one AC. Arms are swapped with the HPPC in place of the AC/10, the AC/2 replaces the large laser, and an extra small laser after CASE was put in for the ammo.

I was actually talking about replacing the AC/s and keeping the Large Lasers. Sure, it would spontaneously combust the first time it tried to fire, well, anything, but that seems to be House Davion's purpose with any Rifleman mod they attempt...

could have pulled all the lasers and put in heat sinks. Though when you alpha strike with it, you don't have to worry about an ammo explosion.

Might relist it as the rfl-wn... being water needed to fire

I *think* the Hammerhands was an original Battle Droid, and has been recently revived in one of the Age of War TROs. It's a 2500s-era design replaced by the Warhammer.

For those that want a Davion atlas to base this on, pate 150 of the houe davion source book published in 1988 has the planet Quentin listed as making the Atlas, Jagermech, Victor and Marauder at the Independence weaponry factories.
Also listed on the same page, on Talon at the Kallon Weapons Industries The Rifleman, Griffin, Enforcer, and Jager mech.

There are other listings in that book, so if you need more, it's there.

A variant of the BNC-3S, a heavy PPC replaces the AC/10 in the left torso. The
twin PPC's are replaces by a triad of light PPC's, 1 in the left arm and 2 in
the right torso. Case is installed in the right torso at the cost of one small
laser. One medium laser is removed, while another is relocated to the center
torso and mounted rearward. Nine additional heatsinks and two more tons of
armor are added.

Once considered a potent war machine, the new Banshee may well emerge as the
next war elephant.

Victor mech would be good.
Remove the ac 20, add in the hppc use the 4 remaining tons from that the form of heat sinks, replace one ton of ammo for a 5th heat sink. The remaining 2 tons that were ammo can be replaced with mls.

Or use 3 lppcs instead with the extra ton devoted to another heat sink on top of the ones listed.

Simpson's did it!

I mean, I published an LPPC variant (the Awesome-Ontos). XTRO:Ontos. Of course, the construction limits were a bit different there, what with the DHS and PPC Capacitors.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The AS7-DP Atlas from Quentin was meant as a showcase of the new PPCs from the
New Avalon Institute of Science, which, interestingly, didn't exist before
3019. The NAIS Pattern Heavy PPC and NAIS Pattern Light PPC opened interesting
possibilities for the AFFS as a whole, and entirely reshaped the AS7-D.

The initial plan for the AS7-DP had been as a quick refit that ripped out the
Atlas's heavy autocannon and replaced it with the heavy PPC, and replaced the
arm-mounted medium lasers with light PPCs. However, difficulties in
engineering the newfangled CASE for multiple ammo feeds led to the suggestion
to replace the SRM launcher with a battery of medium lasers.

The expediencies taken to simplify incorporation of the CASE meant the AS7-DP
was, ironically, a much larger redesign than planned. It was also not easily
packaged as a field refit, though it could be installed in a major maintenance
depot. Instead, most AS7-DP's were new factory builds.

And factory production was up. An engineering exchange program meant to
introduce Lyran engineers to the new PPCs also served to introduce Lyran
knowhow to the Quentin factories. Production would surge by 3025.

The new weapons of the AS7-DP sharply changed the nature of the Atlas. From a
short-ranged bruiser with a single long-ranged weapon, the Atlas became a
long-ranged bombardment platform and a serious threat at medium range. Even 2
additional heat sinks (obtained with slightly trimmed limb armor) would not
allow the AS7-DP to fully utilize its entire long-ranged weapons array.

even more fearsome then before. A little hot firing all ppcs but that ok. just have to switch out a weapon once in a while.

Now since this was a contest, does that mean Cray is disqualified since he is the judge?

Per the original post: "I'm not going to make this a design challenge because then I'd have to judge the results and I don't like doing that, I get too many sad-puppy faces from the losers."
