Overview:
The UNG-4L Ungoliant is a design idea that got completely out of hand. It began as an attempt to create a "companion" 'Mech for JMInc.'s 95-ton Melkor, but the result was a rather mindbending design that stands of falls on its own in rather spectacular fashion.

The Ungoliant is full of oddities: its speed -- unusual for such a large 'Mech; the Quad design -- uncommon on Assault 'Mechs due to the decreased space for mounting bulky equipment; its abundance of extreme close-range weaponry, most notably its dependence on Small Lasers, and finally, its almost ridiculously symmetrical design.

The 'Mech's grotesquely spider-like design is in keeping with its namesake in
J.R.R Tolkien's "Silmarillion", which is itself an asset...the 'Mech, both in
appearance and ability, is terrifying up close.

Capabilities:

The UNG-4N Ungoliant, unlike most Quads, mounts an incredible amount of firepower. While lacking concentrated punch at long range, the Ungoliant is far from weak in that department, fielding a pair of impressive LRMs, which makes it the equal of most heavies at range. However, any careless 'Mechwarrior who mistakes this monster for a missile turret with legs is in for a rude, albeit brief, shock should he attempt to close: the 'Mech's 14 front-facing lasers can melt off nearly 4.5 tons of armor in only 10 seconds.

In addition, the Ungoliant's decent speed coupled with the increased mobility of the quad design allows the 'Mech to close more rapidly than expected by its unsuspecting prey. Finally, armor coverage is substantial, limiting the risk inherent in the bulky XL engine.

Variants:

The sick, twisted minds at JMInc. have worked up a single, shocking variant, which at the same time intensifies and eliminates the 'Mech's greatest weakness: its tendency to overheat at close range. The UNG-4N(A) variant replaces the LRMs, ammo, Artemis IV FCS, and CASE with ERPPCs, which provide improved range and more concentrated punch. The extra tonnage is devoted to 2 additional DHS and 3 tons of armor. With no
minimum range, the PPCs greatly improve the Ungoliant's already-devastating firepower up close. Of course, a close-range Alpha Strike guarantees immediate shutdown, but with no ammo on board, there is no danger of an explosion, and the unlucky target is unlikely to be able to take advantage of the situation.

I doubt that anyone would let them self's get so close to let the small lasers to have any affect do to the fear of being kicked. That would bring this down to having 4 MLs and 4 MPLs which is still a good amount of weapons to bring to bare at close range.
Why argue if the glass is half full or half empty, when you know someone is going to knock it over and spill it anyways.

I was a Major *pain* before
But I got a promotion.
I am now a General *pain*
Yay for promotions!!!

Depends a lot on what you're facing, the terrain, how many enemy units, and, of course, the initiative rolls. This thing would likely never gey a shot with ANY of its lasers in a duel against, say, a Griffin, but a Stalker or Awesome would be feeling the wrath of the Small Lasers.

Mostly, the SLs and SPLs are there to make use of all those Leg Crit spaces.
