Overview: First conceived in the late 3030's the Sobek was to make use of the rediscovered Helm Core technology heralding new machines the likes of which had not been seen since the Star League.
The Sobek was designed to be a fast cavalry with good offensive capabilities, able to cross terrain swifly and gain a positional advantage over the enemy. To this end the mech uses jump jets, has excellent protection and carries a well-balanced mix of long and short range firepower.
Development was slow as the designers had to learn their trade almost from scratch, the first prototypes were tested in 3047, with early pre-production available in 3050, just in time to be thrown into the front lines to stem the Clan invasion.
Capabilities: The early production models suffered many teething problems. The engines had to be overhauled frequently or risk overheating. The PPC and lasers targeting were not optimized as a result only one or the other would fire accurately, while the LRM feeding mechanism was prone to jamming.
Suffering heavy losses at the hands of the Clans the Sobek was retired from the front lines and relegated to backwater militias or sold off to Mercenaries. Because the technology was new and parts were rare, many quickly broke down, leading to the Sobek's reputation of being a lemon.
Battle History: By 3052 most of the kinks had been worked out and the Sobek performed adequately, but sales remained very low. It wasn't until Comstar considered it for adoption that some took note, but the damage was done. Despite good reviews and brisk sales to Comstar, the rest of the Inner Sphere continued to consider it a poor design and eschewed purchasing the Sobek in significant numbers.
There was a resurgence of interest in the design in the 3060's when various factions in the FedCom Civil War were looking for more machines to field. The Sobek was slowly becoming an accepted mech, but ironically the once cutting-edge design was showing its age. The weaponry was Succesion Wars era tech that was rapidly being supplanted by new and better tech.
Field kits to upgrade the mech were made available, they consisted of an ER PPC and a pair of medium pulse lasers, but no official variant was put into production as the Jihad erupted and the decision was made that lesser quality mechs were better than no mechs at all. The factory was briefly held by World of Blake forces, but there was no time to make any design changes.
Forced to abandon the factory, the WoB sabotaged it and production was shut down until 3080, limited production resumed with Comstar and the Republic as its main customers.
Deployment: The Sobek is found with Comstar and Republic forces as well as most other Successor States, Periphery included, where the rugged, older technology is easier to maintain than cutting edge machines.
Variants: With the factory becoming part of the Republic in 3081, funds were allocated to retool the production lines with the latest technology. This variant of the Sobek has remained the exlusiviity of hand-picked Republic troops. The PPC and LRM are replaced by Clan tech equivalents, they add CASE II and an Artemis IV system as well as replacing the medium lasers with Inner Sphere made ER Medium lasers. Extra heat sinks make up for the increased heat.
Another version that uses conventional Inner Sphere technology is available on the open market
