Overview: Conceived as a replacement for the Battlemaster, the Ensign was meant to function not only as a command mech, but also as a fast battlefield superiority mech.
Capabilities: Built around a weight-saving 340 XL engine, propelling the mech to speeds of 64 kph. This allowed the mech to mount a much heavier armament than the original Battlemaster.
The hand mounted PPC was augmented with an underslung Large Pulse Laser, an arm-mount AC/10 on the other side. For close defence the Ensign carried four medium lasers and twin SRM-6 Launchers. Unlike the Battlemaster, they were mounted inside the torso, giving a better field of view to the sides. Two of the medium lasers faced rearwards to discourage the enemy from attacking the rear.
14 tons of ferro-fibrous armour gave the Ensign a level of protection only rivalled by the likes of the Atlas.
Despite the excellent all-round combat capacity the SLDF quartermaster found several flaws in the design. It lacked anti-infantry weapons, despite mounting weapons with HE capability. The short range armament was considered weaker than the Battlemaster, as the Large Pulse Laser was considered to be a ranged weapon and the second SRM rated lower than energy weapons. As a result the Royal version of the Battlemaster was selected instead, though it had many of the same flaws, which lead to accusations of corruption and bribery. The subsequent board of inquiry found no evidence that the Battlemaster 1Gb model had been favoured instead as it was selected on different criteria as a variant of an existing battlemech.
Unable to sell the mech on the open market, production was shut down and the factory was retooled to produce parts instead.
During the first Succession War the Capellan Confederation captured the installations and attempted to put the Ensign in production, but the Federated Suns attacked the world before these plans could be set in motion. Capellan engineers set demolition charges that collapsed a nearby hill and buried the site for centuries. The Word of Blake made a considerable effort to unearth the installations and restart production, but the factory was captured by Devlin's Stone's forces. A Blakist holdout team was lead to wrongly believe that Stone was at the facilities and detonated a "dirty" tactical nuclear device that devastated most of the installations and rendered the ruins highly radioactive.
Nearly fifty years onwards investigators have examined the site and found that the factory was in better shape than expected, but radioactivity levels were still lethal.
Battle History: Several prototypes participated in the Martial Olympiads for several years and proved themselves to be a match for anything the SLDF could field at the time, but the organizers took great care not to match it up with any Battlemasters for fear it might cause further controversy.
The prototypes were mothballed, but put back into service when General Kerensky requested more command mechs for his operations in the Periphery. According to field reports the Ensigns performed adequately, but their age made maintenance difficult and some of the weapons were considered obsolescent. Despite this the mechs survived the Civil War after which they forever disappeared from view. The design fits no known Clan mechs, so it is thought the design went extinct in the early years of the Clans.
Variants: The World of Blake planned to replace the AC with an LBX version and add CASE, while replacing the PPC with an ER version. Dozens of near complete mechs survived the explosion mostly intact and are known to be still at the factory site, but recovering them would be a costly affair.

The biggest thing I would say to replace might be the lpl for an erll. That would be more of a range weapon then the is lpl. It barely outranges the standard medium lasers. Yes the better to hit makes up for alot of issues there. Or a second ppc, but minimum range issues there.
I could see an upgrade using a gauss rifle in place of the 10 but coming up with the extra weight might be an issue. First idea is the lpl, but may not be a good idea.
