Crewed by two operators--a driver and a gunner--the Marathon was easy on the eyes, the wallet, and supply lines, using only standard components in its construction, meaning replacements were easier to come by and virtually no additional training was required for techs assigned to care for it.. Unlike other designs that found themselves swiftly swallowed up in the ravages of the Succession Wars, the Marathon was produced in large enough numbers, and simple enough to maintain, that it survived well into the 3020's, with a few examples still used in the Periphery to this day. Capabilities The Marathon was built around a simple, inexpensive 145-rated internal combustion engine, providing speeds of up to 184 kilometers per hour, allowing it to outrun virtually anything fielded at the time. A hovercraft chassis type was selected for its movement capabilities; designed to be used on open-terrain worlds, its terrain limitations were disregarded as being inconsequential. Three and a half tons of standard armor provided protection on par with most light 'Mechs it was likely to face and/or fight alongside. Two Machine Guns with one ton of ammo provided good anti-infantry capabilities when facing conventional, non-'Mech forces, while an LRM-5 with one ton of ammo provided defense against hardened targets, and opened the possibility of indirect fire support for light lances at a low cost. All weapons were mounted in a turret to maximize fields of fire.
