Overview
Produced for the Great Houses during the Succession Wars by Platypus 'Mech Works, the Sledgehammer was a skirmisher born, with heavy armor for its size and a versatile weapons loadout, designed as an alternative to the Enforcer. While lacking the jump capability or heavy weaponry of its competitor, the Sledgehammer boasted equal speed and armor protection, as well as superior range. While never supplanting the Enforcer as intended, it proved quite popular in some quarters of the Sphere, becoming a favored 'mech for militia and training use especially.
Capabilities
The GA-40, or "Sledgehammer", was powered by a 160-rated Standard fusion engine, which, while not fast, made it able to keep pace with most mediums and heavies of its day. Nine tons of armor provided excellent protection for its size, and armament was provided in the form of one centerline Large Laser, one gauntlet-mounted SRM-2 in the right arm, and an AC/5 in the left arm. This was a versatile loadout, suited for a variety of situations, from medium-range and standoff-range duels to close-in fighting. It had two hand actuators mounted, allowing it to make effective physical attacks through punches and kicks.
Variants
GA-40-2: Removes the AC/5 and ammo, replacing it with an AC/2 and one ton of ammo, making this an effective long-range plinking 'Mech. Remaining free tonnage is used to upgrade the centerline laser to a right-arm-mounted PPC for even better sniping capabilities.
GB-40: A radical refit retaining only the base chassis of the Sledgehammer, the GB-40 removes all weaponry except for the SRM-2 rack and ammunition, replaces the GA-40's autocannon with a PPC, downgrades the Large Laser to a Small, and increases the size of the engine, increasing speeds to 96 kph, making this possibly the fastest 'Mech of the Succession Wars to carry a PPC. Its new role was as a raider and harasser, as well as a highly effective sniper, using its speed to move from cover to cover quickly.
