Overview
Hailed across star systems as being the "Fastest PPC in the Inner Sphere," the Throcken had one sole purpose: Headhunting.
Capabilities
A powerful 250-rated Fusion XL Engine propelled the Throcken at speeds rarely achieved by anything other than, say, a Dasher. An Endo-Steel chassis and state-of-the-art Light Ferro-Fibrous armor saved weight to install a powerful ERPPC, allowing the Throcken to boast incredible range and punch for its size. Ten Double Heat Sinks provided excellent heat dissipation--barring outside forces such as fire or flamers, the 'Mech literally was incapable of overheating unless heat sinks were manually disengaged. Four tons of LFF armor provided decent protection against enemy fire, but pilots were usually taught to rely on speed and range to dictate the terms of any engagement, using the reach of the ERPPC and the speed of the 'Mech to harass and harry enemy forces.
Battle History
This 'Mech has seen use throughout the Sphere but seems especially popular for special forces use, the 'Mech's firepower against other light 'Mechs and its blinding speed making it a potent contender on almost any battlefield...unless you're fighting Assault 'Mechs. Even then, a lance of Throcken can ruin your day. It has seen extensive use by various factions' elite for assassin work, able to strike from afar and disappear before any reaction force can be scrambled. Naturally this 'Mech, especially due to its all-energy weapons loadout, has proved ideal for guerrilla warfare, or for operations taking it away for extended periods from supply lines.
Variants
Throcken DFSSB-25: DFSS standing for Direct Fire Support/Scout. Speed is lowered to 150 kph, with saved weight being used to install a Beagle Active Probe in the center torso for enhanced scouting operations.
Throcken DFSC-25-P: P for "Periphery." Replaces the relatively advanced ERPPC with an ancient Tronel Large Laser in the left arm and an RL-15 in each side torso. Relatively rare outside the periphery, as many warriors prefer the superior range and power per shot of the particle cannon to the potent single volley allowed at medium range by the rocket launchers.
Throcken DFSD-25-P: P again standing for Periphery. Another bizarre RetroTech refit apparently resulting from a surplus of light autocannon and ammunition, the D-25-P removes the ERPPC in favor of another practically archaic weapon, a standard AC/2, with one ton of ammunition.
Throcken DFSE-25: Replaces the ERPPC with an ER Large Laser and ER Small Laser, using saved weight to maximize armor protection. Most commonly seen variation of the Throcken.
Throcken SOF-25: A variant that apparently caters to potential buyers in the special forces, this version of the Throcken replaces the ERPPC with a Light PPC, or, sometimes, three ER Medium Lasers (the designation is strangely used interchangeably), and installs a state-of-the-art EW suite, with Guardian ECM, Beagle Active Probe, and a TAG system allowing it to serve as a capable scout or support 'Mech for light lances.
Throcken VHG-25: VH for Vehicle Hunter. Removes the ERPPC (sigh...) and replaces it with a Plasma Rifle with one ton of ammunition, making this a potent weapon against conventional forces in addition to other BattleMechs.
