Capabilities Armor protection was bumped down to seven tons of ferro-aluminum armor, retaining respectable protection while freeing up more tonnage for weapons. Four tons of fuel provided the same range as the original Ravenclaw, and the same 210-rated XL engine gave excellent speed. Armament was improved to a nose-mouned Heavy PPC, as well as an ER Small Laser in the nose and in each wing. This doubled the craft's effective main weapons range and increased the main weapon's damage by more than 50%. Battle History None. Deployment Standard combat fighter. Variants None. Notable Warriors None.

You didn't have to redo the fighter. The original did not lack as much range as you would think. Now had you used nothing but small lasers, then I would agree. If not for the armor difference, this would be a variant.
it still looks usable. The best thing to do is try both out. The original is better at strafing. This one has the range over the other one, but not sure about more firepower. The damage of the weapons isn't the issue. It is what would be commonly used. Been a long while since I dealt with actually fighting a space battle. Using the fighter would be a good way to decide which version is the better one.
