Overview
During the days of the Star League, the Achilles was designed by Platypus 'Mech Works as an inexpensive escort to the successful "Motherlode" cargo hauler, but quickly became popular throughout the Sphere for myriad uses thanks to its simple weaponry and solid armor.
Capabilities
A 180-rated Fusion Engine kept the Achilles moving faster than the Motherlode. Seventeen tons of standard armor provided incredible durability for such a small fighter, actually better armor protection than the ship it was supposed to protect, and ten double heat sinks mostly kept it cool, although volley fire of its twin Medium Pulse Lasers and twin Large Lasers was advised. Four tons of fuel provided decent travel range, although in this case it was outmatched by the Motherlode.
Battle History
The Achilles served adequately in its given role of cargo escort, and its armor proved a decisive factor in many a dogfight against better-armed fighters. Pirates quickly learned to fear the dagger-like shadow of the Achilles homing in on them.
Variants
AEF-2: Replaces the Pulse lasers with standard versions, and the large lasers with an LB10-XAC with one ton of ammo, usually cluster munitions in order to land crippling or incapacitating blows easily in space.
