==Overview:==
The Mastiff made its debut in 3066. Along with a large profile similar to
Clan Wolf's Dire Wolf and , the mech's name as a means to emphasize the
strength of the Clan, it is indeed a reflection of the canine originating from
Terra.

Originally intended only as a Clan Wolf design to protect their
holdings in the Inner Sphere, limited resources forced Wolf scientists and
technicians to seek aid else where. Clan Diamond Shark was approached and
asked to help in manufacture. Diamond Shark agreed in exchange for a copy of
technical schematics and a small number of the first production run for their
own use. From there, the Mastiff quickly spread to the other invading Clans
who put the Mastiff into production for their own use.

The Mastiff is built as a new generation of Clan front line Omnimech, far from
the norm of Clan construction techniques. Built with relatively little
advanced technology save double heat sinks and utilizing standard armor and a
regular internal structure simplifies construction without having to retool
existing factories of Inner Sphere manufactures located in Clan space. A
standard 285 fusion engine significantly reduces cost and increases durability
to the engine from weapon hits or ammo explosions. With eleven double
heat sinks built into the engine, there is significant room through out the
mech for any possible weapon configuration, even the use of bulkier Inner
Sphere weaponry could be used as a temporary replacement of a damaged
weapon. And oddly, the only hard wired equipment is a Clan Anti-Missile System
and ammo bay in the right torso, perhaps indicating a new way of Clan
thinking.

==Capabilities:==
With the modular flexibility of 43 tons of pod space, it is just as capable as
any Clan omnimechs and many of the configurations seen so far seem to take a
hint from other well known Omnimech configurations, perhaps to simplify the
introduction of Clan Mechwarriors new to the design.

The Primary Configuration is a reflection of the Dire Wolf, with a ER Large
Lasers and LB5-X autocannons in each arm and LRM-10 slaved to an Artemis IV
FCS for long range combat. Close range weaponry includes two medium pulse
lasers and SRM-4. A second AMS is installed alongside the hardwired one for
additional missile defense. Fifteen double heat sinks control heat build up and
nine tons of ammo feed the various ammo dependent weaponry. Due to this
logistical need, the primary configuration is mostly seen guarding Clan
assets or in a supporting, rarely offensive, role.

The next most configuration seen seems to be a blend of several Timber Wolf
designs, giving the Mastiff great flexibility at medium and short ranges. The
A Configuration can soften up an enemy with its twin LRM-15s, ER large and
accurate large pulse laser, before moving into close range to finish it off
triple SRM-6 racks and medium caliber laser systems. A Narc launcher is fitted
to enhance its missiles and an ECM Suit provides electronic countermeasures.
Additional defense systems are a pair of MGs and a single Anti-personal pod on
the left leg. Heat is barely keep in check by the addition of 6 double
heat sinks. Heavily dependent on logistical needs and requiring ten tons of
various ammo, it is often paired in an offensive role supported by the primary
configuration Mastiff.

Utilizing less ammunition compared to other Mastiff configurations, the B
Configuration is adapt at city fighting. Fitting with 3 jumps and an active
probe, it can detect hidden enemies and maneuver around the tight confines of
buildings to either hunt down or evade enemy units. A massive Ultra AC/20 in
the right arm can down or cripple most units, while an accurate large pulse
and twin medium pulse lasers in the left arm can hit fast units. A Streak
SRM-6 ensures a lock on enemy units to avoid damaging infrastructure. The
Mastiff B is well prepared for the possible presence of infantry, with two MGs
and two flames, and quad A-Pods in the legs. 14 double heat sinks can manage
the heat, as long as the mech warrior keeps an eye on his heat gauges.

The C configuration is more adapt as a general purpose combat mech and suited
to Clan one-on-one battles. With an Artemis enhanced LRM-10 and targeting
computer boosting a Gauss Rifle and ER PPC, it favors the Clans emphasis on
long range single combat. A single ER Small laser, two Medium Pulse lasers and
Streak SRM-4 round out the weaponry and can defend against an enemy that
manages to get close. The few ammo dependent weapons are well stocked to allow
the mechwarrior sufficient combat time.

Inspired from the Warhawk, the D configuration is armed for long term
campaigns. While it does not mount the devastating Clan ER PPC,with a massive
coolant system of 23 double heat sinks tightly control the heat build up of
quad ER Large Lasers linked to a targeting computer, it is capable of near
continuous, precision long-range hits. . Other equipment includes two
secondary ER medium lasers, a second AMS in the left torso cross linked with
two additional tons of ammunition to keep both anti-missile units well fed and
a jump capacity of 90 meters to increase mobility over difficult terrain.

The E configuration is somewhat of an oddity, but should not be taken lightly
regardless ot its rare appearance. Mounting three Arrow IV systems, it is a
devastating artillery unit capable of inflicting considerable damage despite
mounting a single ER medium laser for defense, two additional heat sinks and
only four tons of ammo. The one notable battle record of its performance was
of a Clan Ghost Bear unit launching a three-two-three barrage of FASCAM rounds
at the exit of a narrow valley for 80 seconds emptying its ammo bins. Seconds
after the last shell landed, the lead elements of an escaping DCMS raiding
unit entered the minefield, damaging itself beyond repair before the pilot
knew what was going on. The commander of the unit quickly surrendered after
realizing the situation.

I like it. Good price, solid configs, although Arrow IV wouldn't be something you see much on a front-line omni...

The very nature of an Omnimech is its flexibility of fitting for mission, easy of repair and refit, and ability to put it back into the field quickly. If an artillery unit was needed, I see no point why it couldn't be fitted to an Omnimech, provided it fit (don't put it directly on the front lines, but in the rear where it can do its duty and send it back to the depot to refit it according to the next mission).
