Overview:
Dynamics of Gallery have always been interested in expanding their WorkMech
operations to full BattleMech production, and it has only been recently that
Dutchess Lisa Steiner has authorised grants to do so. Their first BattleMech
design onto the Market currently in the Prototype stage has been marked the
HRT-01X Heretic.

The Heretic bucks the Trend of the "Bigger is Better" policy of most Steiner
designs, however it could be argued that the Heretic itself is simply a Light
'Mech grown too big for its skin.

Exceptionally capable for its size, the Heretic systematically destroys its
foes, rather than resorting to pounding them into armour dust.

By sourcing components readily available within the Lyran Alliance - Nissan
Engine, Coventry Structure, ProtecTech Light Ferro Fibrous Armour, Nashan
Electronics - Dynamics and Heretic BattleMechs are hoping to keep costs low,
and availbility high. It appears however, that Heretic BattleMechs had more say
in the design than Dynamics did, this is shown by its name, and also by the
curious lack of any Dyanamics Missile Systems, which are produced on-planet...

It is postulated that Heretic BattleMechs intend to design and sell its
creations both in and outside of the Lyran Alliance. This goes a long way to
explaining why their designs differ from the Lyran Norm of "Big 'Mechs, Big
Guns"..

Capabilities:
It was rumoured that while Dynamics / Heretic BattleMechs were undergoing the
initial design, the research and design teams went under the motto "Just like
the Enforcer, only less Fed-Rat". Oddly though, their choice of components,
although from throughout the Alliance, shows few hallmarks of a Lyran Design
Bureau. Indeed, it appears that halfway through the design process, the ideas
changed, and it went from a Stand up Brawling Battlemech, to a Precise Killer,
with substantial Guerilla Warfare Capability. Unfortunately, the one hallmark
it does show from the Alliance is its comittee design - it is under gunned and
under sized to be an effective brawler, and it is too slow to be an effective
guerilla fighter. However, its complicated electronics suite tends of offset
its failings.

As an overall design, it is slow for its size. The Nissan 200 Light Engine does
however allow the Heretic to get up to around 85km/h at a full run, and a
quartet of Leviathan Lifters give it an adequate jumping distance of 120
meters.

Its offensive firepower consists of a p|air of Defiance B3L Large Lasers. In
typical Lyran fasion, when most people say "Antiquated", the designers say
"Tried and True". When others say "Underpowered", the designers say
"Dependable". The effectiveness however, is not in the weapons themselves, but
in their arm mounts. Research Teams took care in replicating a form of the Clan
Weapon Mounts with an integrated Heat Sink cooling case around the Weapon
itself. This means that when the armour in the arm is breached, the enemy are
almost as likely to destroy the heat sink, as they are doing major damage to
components of the arm iself.

Because the sensitive electronics contained within the Heretic, Heat
Dissipation was a priority, and if nothing else, the Heretic is exceptional in
its ability to shed heat on the battlefield. Indeed, even at its full jump,
firing its weapons, the Heretic struggles to generate excess heat at all. As
for its electronics, the Heretic mounts a Nashan Computers Guardian style ECM
suite, and an advanced targeting computer slaved to the two Laser Mounts.

Although Targeting Computers have been available within the Federated Suns
since 3062, it was not until 3065 that Nashan Diversified have made one
available for general production within the Lyran Alliance, and it is these
that Heretic BattleMechs chose to use within their first BattleMech.

Variants:
Still in the Prototype stage, there was some discussion as to what changes
could have been made to the initial design which Dynamics and Heretic
BattleMechs have made public. The first was the availability of the Light
Engine outside of the Alliance (Presently in 3066 it is only otherwise
available in the Federated Suns), and they designed the Heretic to be able to
be equipped with any standard 200 Light Engine, simply by removing the Jump
Jets (although the design team state "simply", they actually mean "by
painstakingly removing the equipment and rebalancing the design"). This does
decrease the overall mobility of the Heretic, but otherwise makes it reliable
and survivable on the battlefield, and indeed, cheaper to purchase and operate.

The other most obvious refit they accounted for was for the weapons. The High
heat Dissipation levels provided by the Heretic allow refit of the Defiance B3L
Large Lasers with ER Large Lasers.

Refitting both Lasers will however, increase the heat profile of the Heretic to
a point where even its impressive 11 sinks for its size is taxed to breaking
point.

Although the Cooling Jackets are not true Omni Technology, they have borrowed
from its technology, and the early modular technology found on the Mercury.
Replacements and refits of the Lasers or its power couplers is made
exceptionally simple, however, there are limits to it. Presently, only ER
Weapon Refits are recommended, as the Extra Weight of present Pulse Lasers
tends to unbalance the design, and proves difficult to integrate with the
Nashan Targeting Computer. Furthermore, Full size Particle Projection Systems
cannot be accommodated without redesigning the size of the cooling jackets. It
is rumoured however that with a good technician, an enterprising owner could
use a Clan Salvaged ER PPC... (But then, with a good Technician, you can do
almost anything you can afford to pay for just in case you screw it up...)/
Furthermore, Light PPC Technology is being looked at.

It is generally understood that once Heretic BattleMechs is completely off the
ground and making a fair production model, they may indeed offer a variant with
the Standard Engine fitted, to make it easier on those forces who do not want
to rely on the capabilities of their technicians to perform such a delicate and
costly refit.

[OOC Designers Notes]

**THIS BATTLEMECH HAS BEEN REBUILT WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY AND A
DESIRE TO CORRECT SOME OF THE FLUFF THAT WAS INCORRECTLY
USED AT ITS ORIGINAL TIME OF DESIGN, 9 YEARS AGO**

When it came to the oncoming WoB Jihad, I wanted to be prepared with scenarios,
and a few things to throw at them - one such thing was a custom BattleMech or
two, and the Heretic is the first I came up with. I figure 40-45 tons is quite
underrepresented in the game, as most of the designs at that level pack small
bore autocannons (the Vulcan, Hermes and BlackJack all come to mind), so the
Heretic is a compromise... Sure, it boasts out on some Energy weapons, but it
has the heat dissipation to handle it.

I like to design BattleMechs with an eye for Fluff... I mean, anyone can have a
Medium Laser Boat - they are touted as the most efficient weapon in the game,
tonnage to damage to heat to size, but apart from the Draconis Komodo and even
the Clan Nova, they're rare? Why is that? I put a Fluff reason on it... All
laser weapons would draw a lot of power. It was even mentioned in a couple of
the books that for some weapon combos, cycle times between shots were longer
because they took longer to charge (Gauss Rifles especially - a flaw not
represented in the game rules). To further this, I keep the Chart "Upgraded
Technologies Table" next to me, to see what I can use. In 3066 (where the
Heretic is designed), all of its parts are available within the Alliance, but
Light Engines are only otherwise available in the Suns. This 'mech probably
won't be sold readily within the combine, as parts would be hard to replace for
it - Light Engines and Targeting Computers are not available in the Combine
until 3067... My source for this is a FanPro Product - FM:Mercs Supplemental II
- Page 88

(Oh, and on another note - I was browsing the older designs, and saw an
'argument' of sorts on wether MRMs would be available outside of the Combine...
They are considered to be "Readily Available for Routine Upgrades" either
through Subcontracts, or Purchasing from Luthien Armour Works and Shigunga
around 3063 for the Suns and Alliance, and 3064-65 for Everyone Else) -

I like even, balanced designs. But 'Mechs have to have a flaw, or they just
lack... Character... So I spaced its weapons out, balanced the design with
critical slots (although not with weight, the 3 ton Targeting Computer is
balanced with a 1 ton Heat sink - but if anyone asks, I'll say that the
integral heat sinks are spaced 5-3 with a left torso bias within the engine)
Its easily enough to cripple...

Other than that, the Heretic itself is a compromise from most designs, thus it
masters none. Its good enough to go it alone if it can dictate the
circumstances of its battles, but awesome in support, softening up larger
targets weak points to be exploited by other 'mechs.

And why Heretic? I just think its fitting against fanatics like the Wobbies...
Whats worse: An unbeliever..? Or Someone who believes you're wrong..?

Since I'm going to be kicking around with 3D Printing next week... I started on the Prototype.

Lots more smoothing, tweaking, adding lines and details to go... (As of this update, I've already added the cockpit and all, but my internet is funky and doesn't want to upload a second time...

is the lack of a head the reason you hate ac 20's?

Now about the printer. Are you going to send all of us some samples?
Or do we have the just be jealous?

Being that its my own design, and that I own a commercial copy of SketchUpPro, I could get 'em printed commercially anyway. I think even the basic rate at the University is like $1.00 and 15c per Gram... Assuming, of course, it all works out.

I don't hate AC/20s per se... I just prefer Gauss Rifles of all Flavours instead... If I'm dropping the AC/20 tonnage, I'll HGR instead, and make it work somehow...

So the head unit is in the torso, similar to say the archer or marauder?
Just normal to see atleast a bump on the top like a thunderbolt.

As for the distribution, I was kidding. Though it would be cheaper then getting the ral partha figures.

And we have discussed those issues of the 20. Range is the thing that kills it anymore.
The joke was they head cap any mech that they hit in the head.

That's... Curious.

Of all the things to be compared too, I wouldn't have thought an Orion was up there...

Any particular reason, or just a gut feeling?

The "Headless" design was a bit of a compromise to start with. The person doing the printing for me did request a flat surface that it could be flush with to start with, and that seemed like the most appropriate - but I will be drilling probably a pair of antenna holes near the back of that surface. Plus its a little thrust-forward with a point, so its not too bad... Honestly, I wanted something that looked like it would *work*, but harkened back to the feeling of a big, blocky walking Tank.

She aint Pretty.

She just gets the Job Done.

Orion is more about the shape than anything else and the general boxiness of the center torso.

Its definately a Walking Box of sorts.

That fits the fact that:

1) I'm kinda crap at this 3D Modelling from Scratch to start with,

2) Heretic BattleMechs is a young, small design firm... Aesthetic choices come secondary to actually getting the Engineering to work, which I imagine would be quite the task.

Well it's not bad. Besides, you don't practice, you don't get better.
