Does someone know the average rank of an inner sphere tech? Or where I could find out that info. I would guess it varies from faction to faction, specifically I am looking for the Lyran Commonwealth.
It didn't affect gameplay at all, but I thought it was odd that someone gave all their techs a warrant officer rank.
So after talking to the guy who did it, I am now very curious and would like to see it for myself.

My dealing with ranks has been minimal, correctional officers use a different rank system than military, and my brother in laws are away at the moment, so I can't ask them what rank mechanics have in the Army, on average. The two mechanics I knew from a previous gaming group were a sergeant and a corporal. I'm also trying to get a real life comparison to the battletech universe.

The older house books had ranks in there.
They also have the lists of ranks in mechwarriors third edition.
But I don't know of anywhere there is a difference in the tech promotional ranking then the normal soldiers.
I would think the average would be private/corporal for an average ranking, as the label 'tech' is normally used. I doubt there are many above maybe captain in most of the armies, though I believe there was a mention of a field marshal in the federated suns that was connected to the tech section. I think he was a minister, not of the church, but it's been a while.

The best person to answer this is Karagin since he is in the US Army. Its always best to ask an expert or someone that at least has some real working knowledge on the subject.

As for me personally I have known a few techs in the military and all of them where sergeants, All of them where in for a long time and went military career wear you get promoted or kicked out so what I know might not be a good sample.
Why argue if the glass is half full or half empty, when you know someone is going to knock it over and spill it anyways.

I was a Major *pain* before
But I got a promotion.
I am now a General *pain*
Yay for promotions!!!

The question was innersphere technicians. I believe cray is the closest thing to an expert we have on the game here.
But as for military on the board, Karagin seems to be the one to know. Or atleast the one that is active enough to answer before the end of the year

Most techs in the military would have the same ranks as the normal line soldiers with the exception of the warrant officer

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_officer_%28United_States%29

Now there could be things like Technical Sergeants like the US Army had during World War 2 Era, which were NCOs but held positions that covered areas needing leadership in a skilled job set like aircraft re-fitting and or repair or work on at the time state of the art equipment.

I do recall one of the original House Books from the late 80s listed pictures of some of the uniforms and one showed a Warrant Officers, I would need to check to be sure though. In the novel Sword and Dagger, Max Laio calls the mech techs Astrotech or something close to that, but that never seems to follow on as the universe moved forward.

The old house books do have the ranks in them. Only one I don't have is Liao.

And I think the grey death legion, or maybe it was the commacho cabalerros that explained the difference of astrotechs and regular techs. I believe they said astrotechs were not part of the unit, but hired help. And the normal techs moved where the unit goes.

WARRANT OFFICERS

There are four grades of Warrant Officer in the LCAF. These ranks are reserved for scientific and mechanical specialists such as technicians, engineers, computer interfaces, and sail riggers.
Warrant Officers lie somewhere between commissioned officers and non-commissioned officers in rank and pay. A Warrant Officer's authority is confined to his field of expertise and does not extend to the command of soldiers in other situations such as combat.

Page 110 of the House Steiner Handbook goes over the uniform of support personnel and briefly describes warrant officers and their special uniform, basically for tech and computer work.

This was just sent to me by a friend.
