My daughter is a huge quad fan. We would like clarification if possible on the lateral shift. Is it a one hex move or can it be used as long as they have movement points? What I've read sounds like a one hex deal....

You can use lateral shifts as long as you have movement points.

...though obviously, since you're only saving 1MP for not having to change facing twice, it only makes sense to use lateral movement to move around an obstacle. If you move 3 or more hexes in a row laterally then you lose MPs. I found lateral movement to be most useful in an urban environment where streets often branch off. It may also be useful to avoid Piloting Skill rolls when you're running across pavement.

I'd love to house rule this. Feels like it could make quads a lot more useful if it weren't a single-hex-only shift (in practice -- I know you can spend your full MP doing it, but it makes no sense to try).

Keith, very cool that you play BT with your Daughter!
You may Lateral Shift all you like, but it only makes good sense when you are shifting 1 or maybe 2 hexes (to go around an obstacle, as mentioned by "Frabby").
If you put turrets on quads, they really begin to kick butt. They already get a piloting bonus, they can do lateral shift, and mule kick, adding the ability to hit targets in a 360ยบ arc really makes them interesting.
