The Moje class Troop Transport

In response to Lyran invasion of 3060, New Earth Navy Commanders ordered a complete modernization of New Earth's Jump Fleet. One of the largest points of criticism to come from the invasion was the inability of New Earth's navy to pick up New Earth's 4th Corps and return them home. As focus of the people centered in on New Earth's aging Jump Fleet, cracks in New Earth's fleet became clear.

There simply wasn't enough Jumpships to move New Earth's army from one field to another. Another issue was the high costs of maintaining Jumpships that were aging. Many of these Jumpships were captured during the Fourth Succession War while the rest were purchased used. Because of this, the maintenance costs of New Earth's jump fleet had become a sizable percentage of the Navy's budget. It was ruled by New Earth's Congress that the Jumpfleet needed a massive modernization.

In light of the order by Congress to modernize, the design teams pulled a design that had been shelved during the Thomas Rein Destroyer project. Originally the design had been intended to be used as a dedicated carrier. However, the design teams shifted the ship's focus to be a troop transport. A role tha the design was perfectly suited for. Based largely off the Aegis II haul, the new troop transport already had many proven technologies within its design. While the ship design lacked fire power of a real warship, it would more than easily fulfill the need of a dedicated troop transport.

The new design was named, the Moje class Troop Transport. The first haul of the Moje class Troop Transport was laid down at Harthford's new facility, Harbor One. Harbor One had been built deep within the same asteroid belt as Harbor Prime. While the Lyran Invasion had been over for months, its aftermath was still effecting New Earth and its military even throughout the production of the Moje Class. While New Earth Congress ordered a new troop transport to replace its aging Jumpfleet, what they got wasn't what New Earth's Admiralty wanted.

The Moje was designed to run from battle, not take part in it. Thanks to her massive engines that could sustain a 3.25 G burn for an extended period of time and her seemingly endless fuel supply, the Moje could easily out thrust any pursuer that threaten the ship. This thrust ability made the Moje troops transport one of the fastest warships in production across Clan or Inner Sphere space. With her speed and an impressive thick armor belt, the Moje could take a punishment from even some of the heaviest warships while fleeing the battlefield.

Running from battle didn't sit well with many high ranking New Earth naval officers. When they suggested the idea of a combat transport, images of the Potemkim had come to mind. However, supporters of the Moje argued that a massive warship like the Potemkim was simply unrealistic for New Earth's resources. For the resources that it could take to build a single Potemkim, New Earth could build two Mojes. More importantly, New Earth lacked the shipyards to build warships larger than nine hundred thousand tons. Even as the first haul was being worked on, the future project was cast in to doubt.

As the design started to take shape in to a warship, the Moje would become more than just a troop transport. With four massive medical bays and over a hundred medical personal, the ship was given the abilities of a regional medical facility. The ship was fitted with some of the most advanced medical equipment in the Inner Sphere. Fifteen Dustoff Medical Small Craft, which were modified Mark VII craft built by New Earth's Quantum to act as ambulances, were assigned to the project. Tending to wounded from some distant battlefield was not the only role the Moje would fill. The ship was intentionally designed to act as ship of mercy. It was President McGray's intention to broaden New Earth's influence across the Chaos March.

In one of his speeches President McGray stated, 'The Lyran Alliance has chosen their path. The Federated Commonwealth has chosen their own. Now it is time for us to choose our own path. It is time for us to reach out to our neighbors less fortunate as we are. To help them in their hours of need as they helped us during our time.' Speech came shortly after President McGray rendered his support for the Moje Class Transport

Even with support from the President, the Moje had its critics and opponents at high levels of New Earth's Admiralty. And within its weapons system gave the ship's opponents all the ammunition they needed to oppose the ship's continued construction. The massive ship was clearly a warship by definition, however the ship carried no capital weapons. It was because of this clear flaw that caused the program to nearly be cancelled twice during its construction.

However, supporters of the program fought back hard. The Moje program would become one of New Earth's must deeply rooted political battles over the future of New Earth's direct. While no one argued that the Moje was going to be a military warship. It was the primary role of the ship that became the center of the debate. Hardliners led by General Macko wanted to build New Earth in to a powerful military district capable of fighting back the Lyran Alliance. There were even suggestions from the far right regarding taking worlds from the Lyran Alliance in an attempt to further expand New Earth's influence and domain. In this, they wanted a powerful ship that would impose fear when it arrived in system.

On the left, supports of what was seen as Jake Death's dream, were to expand New Earth's influence through measured military force. Instead of conflict, the left saw New Earth's destiny as a beacon of hope instead of war. While forces around New Earth continued to build up for future wars, the Left saw opportunity for New Earth to raise above the coming conflicts. And the Moje Class transport would be their flagship. The Left wanted the Moje to represent that hope and sense of nobility that former President and father of New Earth worked so hard to create.

In this battle, the left would win battle over the direction of the Moje. However, many concessions had to be made. One such concession was the addition of a large number of aerospace fighters. Military hardliners demanded that the ship have a minimum level of protection seventy-six aerospace fighters would be assigned to the Moje to act as a protective fighter screen. The argument for the air wing was that the air wing would give the Moje early warning to threats on approached and even buy the ship valuable time to flee.

If an enemy got pass the Moje's air wing, then those enemies would be greeted by nearly four hundred standard weapons. While these non-capital weapon would only do limited damage to warships, they would deal serious damage to attacking enemy fighters and dropships. These weapons were never meant to be used as offensive weapons for the ship. But in spirit of what the left had been looking for, these weapons were laid out in such a way to adequately protect the ship against fighters and dropships.

However, the lack of capital weapon would hunt the ship throughout production cycle. Despite what the critics claimed, the Moje transport was far from weak or helpless, its armor belt was far from it. While lacking strong offensive weapons, its armor belt is as thick as the Aegis II Cruiser. This gave the ship a massive chance of surviving exchanges with enemy warships long enough to flee. To further the goal of fleeing the battlefield, the Moje was fitted with Lithium-Fusion Batteries to allow the ship to make a rapid retreat from system should the situation warrant it.

But the shinning glory of the Moje is its massive dropship collars which were orientated in five rows of eight along the axis of the ship. With a total of forty dropships this gave Admiralty what they wanted in terms of a powerful military transport. Finally, New Earth's navy had the ability to move an entire Corp with only four transports instead of twelve Jumpships. More importantly was the Moje finally addressed a lasting problem with other New Earth warships.

The lack of adequate cargo to support New Earth's Corps while deployed. With nearly eighty thousand tons of cargo space and additional dropship collars for pure supply ships, the Moje more than made up for this lack of cargo space. To help move cargo from space to units on the ground, more small craft were added to transfer cargo. This gave the Moje a much broader ability to support units on the ground.

It was near the end of development that the birth of the first variation of the Moje occurred. Under pressure from the Left, Harthford designed three Moje's to be converted in to Moje-Rahma or Moje-Mercy class medical ships. These ships dropped all but ten dropship collars, most of its weapons, and the fighter wings. The extra space was converted that space to additional medical facilities, medical personal and more expanded cargo capacity. The Moje-Rahma maintains all the other characteristics of the other Mojes with one exception, the ships are painted all white with a large red crescent painted on multiple locations of the ship to indicate its non-combat status.

Thanks to the Moje, a new style of fleet for New Earth was starting to take shape. At the core of this fleet would be four Mojes troop transports. Depending on the mission, a Moje-Rahma might accompany the fleet to a world that had been hit by a natural disaster. The fleet would be protected by three Thomas Rian destroyers and two Viscount Hall corvettes. The entire fleet would be lead in to battle by a single Aegis II cruiser. Thanks to New Earth's decades of work in data sharing technologies, the fleet would be able to work together to protect the transports. And with all ships of the fleet sharing the same thrust abilities, the fleet a strong advantage in making an attacks against hostile worlds. Or out maneuvering enemy warships.

The Moje marked a surprising turn of events for other minor and regional powers around New Earth. The Chaos March has been a melting pot for these powers to build their influence. While the major Inner Sphere powers were distracted with their own issues, a battle over influence was building across the Chaos March. For these minor powers, the stakes couldn't be higher. For New Earth, the Moje would be their ace in the hole.

Everything changed when Mount Bogda erupted on the Chaos March world of Keid. In the path of destruction was the city of Shenzhen. With hundreds of thousands of suffering, New Earth ordered the first of the Moje ships in to service. The Rahma, a Moje-Rahma Class Medical ship escorted by a pair of Thomas Rian Destroyers was the first to arrive on the scene will vital medical and humanities supplies. Aided with supplies from their WOB allies, New Earth doctors were able help the citizens of Keid during their darkest hours. The move out flanked Wolf's Dragoons who had been working desperately to build influence within the region.

The Rahma stayed on station above the world of Keid for six months providing critical medical services to the citizens of Keid. During these six months vital supplies poured in from both New Earth and Terra. At the end of her six-month tour, the Rahma was relieved by two WOB medical ships. When the Rahma left Keid, she was hailed by the people of Keid as a hero ship who would always been welcome at Keid.

After Keid and with the support of the WOB, the Rahma along with her two escorts warships started a two year 'Good Neighbor' mission around the Chaos March. The mission had the Rahma visiting worlds and providing medical services to those in need. Designed to expand New Earth's influence, the Rahma easily succeeded at this goal. So dangerous to their own goals of expanding influence, the Wolf's Dragoons made a point to monitor the actives of the Rahma while she was on her mission throughout the Chaos March.

I do need help with my Fire Control. Could someone please take a look at it. I never dealt with Fire Control before and wanted to make sure I got it right. For some reason it seems too low.

When you post one of your illegal ship designs will you please say so in the title so people that don't want to look at an illegal ship designs will know to pass on clicking on it.
Why argue if the glass is half full or half empty, when you know someone is going to knock it over and spill it anyways.

I was a Major *pain* before
But I got a promotion.
I am now a General *pain*
Yay for promotions!!!

That is starting to get on the picky side. Should it, among other things, be required that all designs designate in the title: legal/illegal, type of unit, tech base, era, etc? People post their ideas, designs, etc for free, so I wouldn't want to turn it into something like work Besides, new ideas might give rise to some of your own...

Designers Note: Warning, I use a non-standard method for calculating my crew requirements.

This is the very first sentence in this thread. Not sure if you missed it, glossing over to look at that stats or not, but it is there.
Granted it was not saying non standard troop transport, but if this is an issue, then say something in the thread that has suggested a new area to deal with this very issue.
I believe donkey has said in the past he uses a phone to look over posts, so if he has limited data on his phone, I could understand the complaint, but that is an exception, not the rule.

Yes, the difference of the crew cabin sizes allows for other things, but so far this ship looks more like a well thought out jack of all trades set up.
Other then the cabin issues, is there something wrong with the design?
The one thing that did catch my eye was the amount of doors.
I thought 8 was max, but didn't want to say anything before others responded to the post.

I think he was talking about putting all the information in the thread title (that you click on to get to the actual thread) . A lot of information is in an actual thread and I think it is unnecessary to try and cram whatever person x, y, etc. thinks is important, in the thread title.

Hey, I would like to ask everyone to pleas reframe from continuing this senseless conversation about what Our Royal Donkey said or his motivation.

Ghost, I will have to look up the number of doors. I think you might be right, I think there is a max limit.

Can someone please look at my fire control. This was my very first attempt to work with this rule and for some reason I think I got it wrong.

Ghost, I looked up the rule within the BattleTech: Strategic Operations on the table found on page 155

WarShips 8 + [Unit Weight / 100,000]*

*Round fractions up

The Moje has a tonnage of 865,000 ton.

The formula is 8 + (865,000 / 100,000) = 16.65 (round up to 17)

Thank you for raising the question.

Well unless you clearly state that your group uses UBERTECH or this an alternate universe setting, then expect folks to ask questions, clearly here some didn't read the disclaimer at the start of the posting. But then again some times a design is just to powerful or built to exploit every loop hole found in the design rules or just so munchkin that it's not fun to considered playing against, but I am sure that you are well aware of all of this.

You mean the disclaimer at the start of the article wasn't enough? At least he, unlike some, clearly stated that the Moje used home rules and also asked that the discussion etc...about those things be covered in the already established topic, but I guess that was also missed. Now ATTN are saying you are going to start posting what your designs are actually intended to battle against?

As I have said before the fluidiness of the rules allows for custom designs. This means that some folks will need to keep that in mind, and when it's spelled out, then there is no issue. This ship is no worse off then any of the canon vessels of a similar class.
