This is a light mech, that can do SIXTY DAMAGE. I got a little interested in the idea of "pocket assaults" that someone floated a few months ago. In my mind, a pocket assault is a mech that can do damage and/or absorb damage significantly out of proportion to its weight class. Here we have a 35 ton light mech, that has 13.5 tons of armor. And weapons that can theoretically do 60 points of damage in one turn.

(it uses every possible bit of weight saving tech to accomplish this.. including IS developed small cockpit and XL gyro. Its a mixed-tech design from an IS Clan (Bears) that uses lots of other IS developed tech, so no kvetching.)

Now, to qualify this, the pilot is risking a shutdown if he/she does and alpha-strike more than once every other turn... or unless pilot uses volley fire. Ideally, with this design, you lead in with only the ER Large until you close to range of the Improved Heavy Mediums, then you switch to those.

Speaking of, the Improved Heavy Medium Laser seems to be the most efficient weapon in the game. One ton, and two crits, gets you TEN DAMAGE? Nice. Range is anemic, the same as 3025 regular medium laser.

The 35 ton Bear Claw is only able to mount the massive 13.5 tons of armor because it is Hardened Armor, which shaves off one flank MP. It can move at 5/7, or 6/8 with TSM active (which is easy and safe, with an all energy loadout (no exploding ammo to worry about). Hardened Armor means no instant headshot kills with anything but either type of Heavy Gauss rifle. The 9 points of Hardened in the head absorb 18 points of regular damage, plus the 3 from internal structure.

No weapons in the arms let you do double TSM-enabled punches (8 damage each) while firing weapons at point blank range. Targeting computer somewhat ameliorates the inaccuracy of what will be a constantly-overheated gunnery system.

Thoughts? I wonder what other "pocket assault" designs people can make

EDIT: changed name to "Bear Claw" as there is already a book design named "Bear Cub". Dammit.

Might be better named bear crapper as someone gets pounded by the damage. They will need to clean their shorts if they survive.

The pilot frying himself, might be an issue, as well as trying to cool down. But when you keep that in mind, this is definitely a surprise unit.
To bad they don't have the ability to grab ahold of other mechs so you can keep raking them with weapons fire.
Might give rise to a 'bear hug'.
