At less than 6 mil a pop, this "Alacorn (Fuel Cell)" is barely a THIRD of the cost of a regular Alacorn. Due exclusively to switching the engine from an XL Fusion to a Fuel Cell. (fuel cell weighs slightly LESS than a fusion engine at least on vehicles; as vehicle fusion engines have to include the "transmission equipment" anti-vehicle handwavium.)

As far as weapon selection, this version of the Alacorn ditches one regular Gauss for the best crit-finder in the game, the Silver Bullet Gauss. The two regular Gauss rifles are clan, saving four tons. Four clan light machine guns offer 360 degree coverage for some anti-infantry capability, and to soak crits. Half-ton bay soaks another crit, enough for a couple of spotters or a single light PA suit (one of the jump-capable ones, maybe a Nighthawk, would be an excellent spotter). 12 tons of hardened armor, so one ton less than the regular Alacorn.

I'd prefer closer to twenty tons of armor, which one could swing without reducing offensive firepower but then you'd need to put that damn pricey XL engine back in.

(I'm trying to narrow in on the perfect combination of cost/capability/durability in an MBT-type tank.)

Looks like a nasty unit. Even though it looks light on armor, the hardened does play tricks on you if you don't pay attention to what it does.

Removing the 'crit' slot of the infantry bay would give you half a ton, but that isn't going to do much.
Though I wouldn't really say you should, the mg set up is another ton and a half.
Not needed, but potential points on both.

Now I understand the silver bullet gauss rifle for the crits, but using a third normal gauss would save you an additional 3 tons on the weapon, and swap the ammo to normal rifle, meaning you might be able to drop a ton of it.
Might be a decent variant.

Have you considered using light gauss rifles? Not as hard hitting as the normal ones, but might allow an extra one plus something else. May even allow you to drop some weight, though that isn't a big deal.
A lance of these units would allow the old IS PA unit to be used. So that can be a bonus. Infiltration of a base with the alacorns in overwatch mode.

If you use it as part of a company, a c3 might be worth adding. Sit are range and bring the rain down.
