The Scylla and Charybdis are the Crossroadian Republic's (Alt. History Faction) hundred-ton midgit submarines that are usually produced on-site of the planet where they're intended to defend. Scyllas and Charybdis are usually based inside underwater fortifications or large capital submarine "mother-ships" that carry their own contingent of both types of subs.
The Scylla and Charybdis are built on a similar chassis, however the design decisions at the end of the manufacturing cycle determines whether the chassis will become a Scylla type or a Charybdis type. The Scylla features side sponsons for its torpedo battery, providing 360 degree coverage for its torpedoes. The Scylla is also provided with a healthy load of reactor-type armor. A large turret derived from the Andryusha-class frigate is installed on the Charybdis, decreasing the armor coverage somewhat (although still very respectable).
The Scylla is built as a point-defense weapon to defend water fortifications or its mothership from multiple hostile threats inside the water at once, whether they be frogmen, other submarines, or an unfortunate Battlemech. Its armament totals 40 LRT tubes, many of which can target independently of each other. 12 SRTs tubes dot the hull as secondary weaponry, although long-range LRT battles are theorized to dominate in submarine combat. The Scylla is specialized at engaging multiple small targets, but likely won't be useful for engaging similarly HarJel-protected opponents, so other ships in the arsenal will be likely to used against those e.g. Crossroadian Krakens.
The Charybdis is the most vital component of the submersible self-defense forces they are attached to. The Charybdis packs a turreted Long Tom cannon which can provide artillery support to onshore forces during an engagement for a little over 3 minutes before having to fall back and reload. Using Charybdis for offshore bombardment is much safer and cheaper than using a capital submarine for the same purpose as they're more disposable. However, the Charybdis completely lacks any other defensive weapons at all, making it extremely vulnerable to everything else. Hence is the purpose of the Scylla and other submarines.
The Scylla and Charybdis utilize fuel-dependent engines and ammo-dependent builds, making either mobile or fixed bases to operate from a prerequisite to their use. However, prototype models for offensive operations that includes secondary energy weapons and various forms of fusion engines are currently being developed.
