The Breakaway was a jumpship that was first produced in the late 2300's and was used during the Age of War because it could protect its cargo better than just about any other model of civilian jumpship. While newer jumpcores were becoming available at the time of its inception that allowed jumpships to jump twice as far, the increased internal capacity allowed by the smaller, less capable primitive K-F Drive was preferred by the Breakaway's designers.
Recognizing that the value of cargo further from human habitation increased almost exponentially, the designers at Chesterton Shipbuilding, previously builders of dropships and small craft, believed they could enter the jumpship market by producing a jumpship capable of defending merchant dropshuttle from predation by pirates in the deep periphery.
Unfortunately, because they were inexperienced with building jumpships, their first attempt at building the Breakaway almost ended in failure and required the design team to re-engineer the vessel completely three times after the project had begun.
When the first Breakaway slipped its moorings, sold to a small transport company operating nearly four hundred light years from Terra for a sum of less than 50% of the ship's production costs, the company had decided to cancel any future production; the process proved to be unprofitable.
However, in 2379, that ship was attacked by more than ten armed dropshuttles when the captain failed to allow a group of pirates to board his vessel. Video footage of the event, showing the Breakaway handily destroying the pirates, resulted in increased interest by several large shipping conglomerates. Chesterton Shipbuilding sold the line to Keister Shipyards Limited, happy to offload their small jumpship production facility at a slight profit.
In 2381, after receiving nearly 60 pre-orders, Keister wasable to raise enough capital to get the line started and was producing Breakaways at a rate of five per year. While Keister was able to produce nearly 73 ships in 15 years, the cost of production was so high that the company ended up bankrupt before the last several dozen ships' purchasers received ownership of their Breakaways. The 37 completed ships were sold with the rest of the company's assets and seemingly disappeared, but at least seven serving in the Reunfication War and three or four emerging during the Amaris Civil War; today, one or two pop up occassionally in the deep periphery or abandoned in distant star systems.
The 36 that made it to their intended owners, as well as the first Breakaway, served continuously throughout the Age of War as armed jumpships protecting shipping lanes and as warships escorting planetary assault forces until Star League treaties finally forced their decommission in the 2500's.

Yeah, that's not bad at all, and the weapons placement is suboptimal for orbital bombardment, which is good, given its job. Armor is heavy as heck, but makes sense for what amounts to an armed merchant cruiser.
