One of my favorite Inner Sphere book assaults, the Thunder Hawk,
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Thunder_Hawk
gets an update that greatly improves both its damage and its battlefield longevity. The downside to THREE gauss rifles is if one of them blows up, its basically a dead Thunder Hawk. The solution is to use a Light Engine instead of an XL, move two of the gauss rifles to the arms, and mount CASE on the one torso-mounted gauss. The heavier engine is balanced out by weight savings elsewhere from Endo Steel, XL Gyro, and Small Cockpit.
This actually frees up enough additional tonnage to mount an ER PPC with a capacitor that increases potential alpha-strike damage to a very nice 60. One of the three gauss rifles is now a silver bullet gauss so the Thunder Hawk can exploit the holes made by the two regular gauss and the 15 point damage hit of the capacitor charged ER PPC. There is a C3 slave in the head so if a fast lancemate in the network gets close the heavy hitting long range guns become deadly accurate. Lacking the expensive XL engine this design is actually two and a quarter-ish million less expensive than the original Thunder Hawk.
Downsides are only twelve shots per regular Gauss rifle, (standard 16 for the SB gauss) and two tons less armor than the original Thunder Hawk; but this design actually lasts longer on the battlefield as it doesn't have the deathtrappy Spheroid XL engine.

Have to say, this is a good design. I like the addition of the ppc. I don't really like small cockpit, but then I do like to think if I was piloting a craft, I would like to have some room without smashing elbows into the sides of the cockpit.
Though I would think some of the equipment the IS has should have improved by the 3100's, especially with some clans being in the IS for a while.
Still. It does what it is made to do. Become a threat on the field by showing the enemy they are outgunned.
