It's 3040, the fires of the Succession Wars have begun to dwindle and in the shadows of the embers a FedCom ship on return from a covert mission into Draconis Combine territory is set upon by pirates. The crew dead, it's cover of merchant cargo stolen; the AFFC Ardent Endeavour drifted listlessly (and lifelessly) in space. Until a small company strength Mercenary Unit named 'Paving Company' emerged nearby. It's commander, 1st Captain Todd "Motormouth" McDirby, would stumble upon the hidden CASE schematics, and one fateful (if as yet unfinished) 'Mech Blueprint. The Layman.

Motormouth would eventually trade the CASE tech to companies in exchange for large sums of C-Bills, using regular auctions held for the highest bidder. Using these funds to hire a team of specialists, he would later develop the then unfinished Layman, found his own small company, and then sell the factories to Defiance Industries for a mint. He would later sell the blueprint to Kallon Industries. Although Defiance tried to sue him, it was explicitly stated in the contract Defiance had only purchased the complex in the Free Rasalhague Republic, including the computer with the schematics, but not the schematics themselves. Defiance would alter pay Motormouth in a settlement for a copy of the rights to produce the 'Mech, meaning that both Kallon and Defiance would both technically have the right to produce the 'Mech

Motormouth would retire to his own planet, only to have it razed shortly after the Clan Invasion by Smoke Jaguars for unknown... 'reasons'

The Layman has two models built from each of it's owners. Both are built on a TYPE-0036 chassis, but the power plant, armor, weapons and such vary wildly between the Kallon Industries version and the Defiance Industries version. The Layman's primary load-out is a single Large Laser for long-range direct fire, as well as an LRM-15 for long-range indirect fire. An SRM-6 and a pair of Medium Lasers would round out it's close range armament, while a pair of MGs would provide additional Anti-Infantry support. An Ejection Seat would allow the pilot to escape in an emergency.

Egad! It's a 60-ton Thunderbolt!

Oops. I forgot about the Thunderbolt.

Is a 60-ton Thunderbolt a good thing?

EDIT: Or was that just mocking sarcasm? I'm confused. I wasn't aware of the Thunderbolt's design when I made this. Is it an improvement?

Oh, it is...it definitely is.

Just having some fun. I've lost count of the number of "all-purpose" 'Mechs I've designed only to realize I've re-invented the T-Bolt.

My first variant of the Layman (hereby referred to as the Model B) would trade the LRM-15 for a trio of LRM-5 launchers, freeing up a ton of weight and providing more tactical flexibility; embracing the ideals of "Bracket Fire" as opposed to Alpha Strike tactics would mean dropping two of the Double Heat Sinks in favor of adding in an Artemis IV FCS to the LRM Launchers. Finally, I'd drop the two Machine Guns and Half-Ton of ammunition for an ER Small Laser and a Target Acquisition Gear, while upgrading the remaining Medium Lasers to ER Models. Because there doesn't seem to be anything in the Right Torso, I am also considering moving some of the weapons there.

[Optional] Design Quirks Overview:
Superior electronics enable the Model B to manage it's heat levels more efficiently, track multiple targets without suffering severe lag, cut through electronic interference without issues, process the user's input with negligible latency, and even detect and reliably hit foes regardless of how far away they might be.

Unfortunately, these advanced electronics are also its downfall, being expensive to install, and oftentimes difficult to fix or replace in the event something goes wrong. The mech also seems to be cursed with bad luck, as things will always seem to break without warning or discernible cause. Even the cooling has been known to give out on occasion.

Positive:
+ Accurate Weapon x3: 1 Point Cost per Launcher (3 Points total) . Each LRM-5 will receive a -1 Bonus on gunnery rolls.
+ Combat Computer: 3 Point Cost, reduces heat produced each turn by 4 (to a minimum of 0).
+ Multi-Trac: 2 Point Cost, eliminates Secondary Target penalties from firing in the Front or Side firing arcs.
+ Easy to Pilot: 2 Point Cost. Non-Elite pilots get a bonus to piloting rolls.
+ Improved Communications: 2 Point Cost. The mech reduces the level of Sensor Ghosts experienced by 1, and it can attempt a free satellite uplink without any of the usual downsides of doing so.
+ Improved Sensors: The mech's electronics are quite ahead of their time, and as a result the mech functions as if it had an Active Probe equipped.
+ Improved Cooling Jacket x3: 1 Point Cost per Launcher, 3 Points Total. Each LRM-5 produces one less point of heat than normal.

Negative:
– Bad Reputation: 1 Point Rebate. Because the Model B is rumored to be cursed with bad luck, if the owner tries to get it off their hands, then they will only get half what they paid for from the factory.
– Cooling System Flaws: If the mech falls, receives enough damage to knock it off balance, or performs or executes a physical attack, then the pilot must make another roll. If they fail, then the cooling system will give out, and the mech will produce an extra five points of heat at all times.
– Difficult Ejection: 1 Point Rebate. If the pilot ever needs to eject, there is a chance that they could be injured. This mostly boils down to the bad luck that the Model B is rumored to be cursed with.
– Difficult to Maintain: 1 Point Rebate. Things are always breaking, and the mech is harder to keep in optimal condition as a result.
– Inaccurate Weapon: 1 Point Rebate. Due to a flaw in the focal lens for the ER Small Laser, it suffers a +1 Penalty To-Hit. Attempts to fix it will fail, because a correctly manufactured focal lense will not fit. Damn proprietary parts...
– No Cooling Jacket x2: 2 Point Rebate per system (4 Points total). The Target Acquisition Gear shouldn't build up noticeable levels of waste heat, but it does anyway, due to a faulty cooling mechanism, thereby producing 2 points of heat whenever it is used. The ER Small Laser also suffers from this problem, producing as much heat as a Medium Pulse Laser.
– Non-Standard Parts: 1 Point Rebate. Replacement parts, specifically the electronics, are difficult to come by if you can't get them from the factory.
– Obsolete, 3052+: 4 Point Rebate. The end of the Clan Invasion led to the Layman Model B being discontinued, so replacement parts are increasingly difficult to find as the decades wear on.
– Poor Workmanship: 1 Point Rebate. The curse of bad luck means that the Model B is far more likely to suffer Critical Hits, with a +1 Bonus to all such roles.
– Prototype: 2 Point Rebate. Some parts of the Model B's construction are allegedly still undergoing testing... Or maybe it's just the bad luck again. An additional +2 Bonus to Critical Hits will be suffered.
