I am thinking about putting together a Battletech campaign loosely inspired by the military sci-fi of the 1970's (Drake, Pournelle, Haldemann, et cetera), which was itself inspired by the various grubby wars in the Third World (Africa, Asia, Latin America) where the USA and the USSR sparred through proxy forces. Each superpower would support one or more sides, jockeying for advantage in hopes of gaining control of local resources without having to expend major resources or provoking a nuclear war.

In Battletech terms, this would be a world in the middle of a civil war, possibly out in the near-periphery, or belonging to perhaps the Free Worlds League. In the face of trouble being spurred on by meddlesome offworlders, the government hires mercenaries - (the PC's) to deal with the problem. The PC force would be maybe a Union and a couple of Leopards, a smallish force for a world this size. 3025 setting, possibly with Savage Worlds for RP stuff.

I haven't figured out the backstory or the astrography yet, but I have some ideas.

Can anyone suggest a good location in the FWL?

- low technology... 1970-80's local manufacturing
- strategically valuable mining and petrochem resources
- strategically located on the jump lines
- not important enough to risk a war to capture, but definitely worth proxy warfare shenanigans

I don't have access to books that describe worlds in the FWL, but the story you are talking about is one the factions in the FWL have had in it's long history.

And from the sounds of this, it is a long term raid. But the question comes up about the tech level.
After your supplies run out, will they be able to ship in more?
And if so, will there be a fight in space, such as a blockade around the word?
Hell, on the Capellan border, they had alot of this sort of activity going on.

And the periphery has alot of the same. Could have them hit as a pirate raid hits and have to deal with all combatants, with each area like a city state.

Sure, anywhere along the CapCon/FWL border or their border with the Magistracy.

Lothian League. Circinus Federation. Marian Hegemony. Any of the planets on the FWL frontier which aren't affiliated with one of the "big states". FWL is such a mess....

I think late 1990's to late 2010's technology might be more fitting for the BattleTech universe and might actually make things a little bit challenging for the people who are bringing mechs; even when using real world science and engineering knowledge, 1970's technology is an absolute joke compared to Age of War technology, let alone 3025 technology.

If the locals do have access to mechs of any kind, though, then I would love to see a variant of the UrbanMech with the following modifications:
1: Small Cockpit w/ no ejection mechanism.
2: Swap out the AC/10 for a Primitive* LRM-20.
3: Swap out the Small Laser for something embarrassingly low tech, but still super deadly.
4: Running on an Internal Combustion Engine or a Primitive Fuel Cell engine. Jump Jets would be replaced with a 'Mech Jump Pack*.
5: Using Industrial* (aka Primitive) armor.

*For Reference:
- Primitive LRM/SRM launchers have a –2 to Cluster Hits rolls. They are not compatible with any enhancements such as Artemis or NARC beacons, and also have –25% less ammo per ton (rounding down).
- With the limited technology on planet, only three types of ammunition should be available for LRMs; Dead-Fire, Heat Seeking and Inferno. Don't forget to check the Wiki pages for all three of those~
- 'Mech Jump Packs would weigh and function the same as Jump Jets, except they operate without producing any heat, require a limited supply of fuel, and are mounted externally to the rear of the mech and thus completely exposed to incoming fire.
- Industrial Armor only provides 67% the protection per ton of standard armor, but functions basically the same.
