How well would the Mackie fare in other eras?

Succession Wars / Civil War / Clan Invasion / Jihad / Dark Age etc.

I'm curious.

The Hegemony's militias kept the Mackie in production until the Amaris Coup, and kept them updated. (Amaris ended production because his forces were humiliated several times by loyalist militias with the "archaic" Mackie.)

As presented in TR:3075, the MSK-9H Mackie is a standard for Hegemony militias and is fully modernized, at least to 3025-era gear: modern engine, modern structure, modern cockpit, which makes it a 3025-era, 100-ton assault 'Mech. Against contemporary Star League-era assault 'Mechs or Clan technology it'd be at a disadvantage, but it was 100 tons with 20 single heat sinks, 19 tons of armor, 2 PPCs, 2 medium lasers, Beagle probe, and an AC/20. That's something you can't laugh off.

The MSK-8 and MSK-7s were similar with the -9H, but - depending on the militia - might be quite a bit more modernized. The Hegemony had the wealthiest worlds in human space, so finding a Mackie with a Gauss Rifle, ER PPC, or double heat sinks isn't out of the question. That's a credible threat in any era, even if isn't the meanest kid on the block.

Side note: I'm currently GMing a mercenary game where a lance of busted, poor mercs are guarding a Periphery planet (Wynn's Roost, get the Touring the Stars before the .pdfs sell out! ). Wynn's Roost wasn't really directly harmed by the Succession Wars, just impoverished and raided by pirates, and the pirates tended to ignore the national history museum...which had a Mackie from the Star League era.

The planet managed to combine all its limited technological resources to get the Mackie running and gave it to the PCs, who had the only decent MechWarriors on the planet (well, the only ones that weren't pirates). It did a pretty good job against pirate 'Mechs in its inaugural battle, except for soaking up 3 head hits (medium laser, medium laser, flamer).

So, it's going to be a while before they can get the behemoth back on its feet. Also, they lost their MechWarrior with a gunnery of 2 and the replacements are all locals with 6 gunnery and 7 piloting.
