I have been working on calculating BV2 values (amongst other things) using Excel. Many of the Mechs I have plugged in have come out with a BV2 number that matches the listed number, but some don’t. As an example, here is how I calculated the Commando COM-2D:

64 armor x 2.5 = 160
43 structure x 1.5 = 64.5
25 tons x 0.5 = 12.5
(no special equipment)
Subtotal: 237 points

Two tons of ammo : -30
Subtotal: 207 points

Max movement of 9 means a movement modifier of 1.3
207 x 1.3 = 269.1 (defensive rating)

Medium laser = 46
SRM-4 = 39
SRM-4 AMMO = 5
SRM-6 = 59
SRM-6 AMMO = 12
Weapon/ammo subtotal: 161 points

Ten total heat sinks = 10
(add six for calculation) = 16
movement heat = -2
Mech heat efficiency = 14
Weapon heat = 10
Since weapon heat is less than heat efficiency, all weapons are worth full rated value (161 points)

We add mech tonnage to get subtotal of 186 points.

Now we run the following formula:
1+((running mp+(jumping mp/2)-5)/10)
Since this mech can’t jump, we input 9 for the running mp and get a result of 1.4
We take that result and put it to the power of 1.2, resulting in 1.497454526 or so.
We round that number to two decimal places which gives us 1.5
We multiply the 186 subtotal by 1.5 to get and offensive value of 279.

We add the Defensive value calculated earlier (269.1) to get a total BV2 of 548 (when rounded).

The problem is that the COM-2D is listed as 541. If my calculation is “correct”, should we be using a BV2 of 541 for the COM-2D? If I’m not correct, what mistake am I making in the calculations?

It was a typo. SRM-6 ammo is 7, not 12.

When it comes to BV2, the formula is known to be... unreliable. As in, Herb Beas actually considered abandoning BV altogether because sometimes the factcheckers couldn't agree on the BV value of a given unit.
The MUL is considered to offer the "official" values, regardless of wether or not one can replicate these numbers by oneself. As such, the values given on the Sarna wiki page aren't particularly helpful anymore ever since the MUL came into being.

I appreciate you telling me this.

Just to let you know, I came REALLY close to getting all of the 'Mechs out of the first TRO to come out correctly. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot about BattleTech in the process.
