-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wanted to see if I could make a practical Superheavy Battlemech that could feasibly be used fairly often in the Inner Sphere. I believe I have succeeded by limiting its role as a limited sort of "Company Commander" and limiting the size so that it can keep up with most Assault Battlemechs.

Note:By "feasible", I don't mean "optimal". I'm sure it's not optimal and you can find something similar by modifying an Assault-class design to get most of these equipment and the role itself on a single battlemech. Optimal isn't really the point, the point if whether or not a SHM can be built with enough flexibility to not be instantly overshadowed by much cheaper designs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Kronos is a company-commanding anti-aircraft Super-Heavy Tripod Battlemech. It is designed to be fielded as the head of an entire Company of C3 Master-carrying & C3 Slave carrying AA vehicles. Modified Riflemen, Jagermechs, or Partisans are usually used as the Kronos's company-mates.

While the Kronos costs about as much as 2 light-engine equipped Assault Mechs, its intended role is as the lead Battlemech of an Anti-Aircraft company which doesn't require that many Command Battlemechs, so the Kronos is often seen as worth its cost.

The Kronos is suprisingly agile for its size: a 390 XLE propels the Battlemech to similar speeds of a typical Assault Battlemech. In fact, to the surprise of many, combat reports state that the Kronos has superior off-road mobility compared to most Assault-class Mechs, wading over rubble and light forests with ease and turning 180 degrees at the drop of a time in comparison to bipedal assault Mechs.

The Kronos carries a primary armament of twin Silver Bullet Gauss Rifles. While powerful against ground vehicles and particularly deadly against VTOLs and fighters, the weapons are fairly meager in general for a 130 ton design. The backup weapons include 2 ER flamers and 6 ER Medium Lasers, fairly effective against closing threats.

However, Its true usefulness lies in its electronic suites. The Kronos, as stock, possesses a Boosted C3 System, which cannot be interrupted by any other electronic (including the common Guardian ECM Suite) except for Angel ECM. An Angel ECM Suite shrouds the Kronos's attending company in a protective ECM shroud, stopping most sensors cold and preventing all but the most persistent AECM forces from cutting off nearby C3 systems. Finally, a Bloodhound Active Probe is attached to root out ambushes and further extend the Kronos's sensor ranges. This provides a substantial advantage for the Company: in poor weather or lighting conditions, a VTOL or slow-moving fighter (or anything else) can be detected before it can even be seen, and thanks to C3, if the Company leader can detect it, so will the company. This early detection can be the difference between getting surprised by a bomb-laden fighter and said fighter eating dirt after gouging on a Company-worth of LB-X shells.

The Kronos is usually designated as a Command Mech, but on occasion they have been modified to have Battle Computers to better control their AA Companies.

Typical Variants:

Command:
The Command variant replaces its entire secondary armament of 6 ERMLs and 2 ER Flamers with 8 tons of Communication Equipment. This variant is usually attached (with a defending company of C3 Vees & Mechs) as a command Mech of much larger formations, like Regimental Combat Teams. This variant includes a Battle Computer as standard.

Non-Boosted:
The normal C3 Slave and C3 Master systems are more common and lighter to equip. The Non-Boosted variant swaps the C3 Boosted Master for a regular C3 Master to be compatible with them. Sometimes extra equipment or weapons are jerry-rigged onto the machine to make use of the free ton, like a flamer or A-Pods, but this is not a typical modification.

Lite:
The C3BM is replaced with a C3M, the Angel is replaced with a Guardian, and the Bloodhound is replaced with a Beagle. While this electronic suite is not nearly as powerful as the original, the changes shave millions off the Battlemech's C-Bill cost.

Arrow IV:
The Silver Bullet Gauss Rifle is replaced with an Arrow IV, and the secondary armament is replaced with CASE II in each torso and ammunition for the Arrow IVs, usually with Air-Defense Arrows. This variant can double as an expensive but fairly mobile all-terrain artillery vehicle.

Thumper:
The Silver Bullet Gauss Rifle is replaced with Thumpers, and the flamers are replaced with CASE II. On occasion an extra ER Medium laser or two may be replaced with extra Thumper ammunition, but four tons is usually considered plenty already. This variant still has its anti-aircraft targeting, but the Thumper isn't quite as proficient at this as the Arrow IV or Silver Bullet.
