31 Oct 3050 Clan invasion is halted for one year after the ilKhan is killed by a Free Rasalhague Republic suicide attack at the bridge of the Dire Wolf.

When the Grand Kurultai eventually voted to return to Clan Space and elect a new ilKhan before resuming the invasion.

(p. 58 Invading Clans – A BattleTech Sourcebook (#1645)

However when ilKhan Ulric Kerensky was killed during the refusal war with-in 3057, Lincoln Osis of Clan Smoke Jaguar was elected ilKhan within the Inner Sphere.

Can someone explain why did the Clans not return to Clan Space to allow all the clans to vote for the new ilKhan as per 3050?.

Also what would be the political ramifications of those still in Clan Space being disrespected in such a manner?.

By this point returning to Clan space wasn't something they could easily do, they were starting their separation from the Homeworld Clans by this point. The Homeworld Clans were already ticked off over how they were left out of well everything and I think this is the beginning of events that led up to the War of Reaving.

I think it would have been a lot better in the long run if all of the Clans went to the Inner Sphere at once, since there wouldn't have been any Wars of Reaving, and there probably wouldn't have been any Jihad or FedCom Civil War either.

However, it would also have meant that the Inner Sphere would be completely screwed and they probably would have lost...

How can a new ilKhan be elected in the field when Sarna’s own wiki page entitled “ilKhan” states, “The Grand Kurultai then internally elects a Khan to become the ilKhan who serves as an arbiter between Clans during the time of crisis, acting with the power of the Grand Council”?

At what point did the Grand Kurultai even come together …. Via a HPG relay transmission from Clan space to the Inner Sphere?

At this time it is more plausible there was no ilKhan and each Clan was acting independently as each Clan’s Khan and saKhan within the Inner Sphere would have to break from hostilities to then attend the Grand Kurultai and be present to conduct the solemn ceremony regarding the election of he lKhan.

The writers just got it wrong at this stage, unless …..

there is a little unknown article / caveat that states in the event of total war, and the death of the ilKhan occurs …. and a Grand Kurultai cannot be formed …. then the ilKhan position will go to the runner up of the previous Grand Kurultai until such a time as a Grand Kurultai can be formed and a new election held.

This is more plausible at this stage …. thus you have your promotion to ilKhan in the field.

In 3050 - all sides (IS and Clans) ceased their hostilities thus allowing for them to return to Clan Space to conduct the Grand Kurultai - return to the IS - re-commence the war.

If I remember right, the clans grand council did convene thru hpg. I want to say that was in the novels, so being canon might be a little loose for a term.
This was for the time Ulric died, not the first council to invade.

As for the election to raise Ulric to lead, I think the IS wasn't ceasing their hostilities by choice. I think the prayed for more time to prepare for the clans return. Or so the novels and such suggest.

All the clans coming in at once would have done the same thing as the clans not bothering to send the Wolf's Dragoons in, and just ignored the IS.
The developers would not have made any money, due to no new wars going on. Well, maybe they could have avoided the FC from becoming reality. Simply no calm capellan border, no real way to try and gather the troops to invade like the 4th war did.
