While it was obvious to the various military organizations of the Inner Sphere that many of the DEF-3N "Defender" BattleMechs had been left behind by the SLDF during their Exodus from known space, they remained unaware for centuries that some of the venerable light 'Mechs had, in fact, made it to what was now Clan space. While most likely a few of them remain in their original configuration in some cases, the vast majority that remained active were upgraded to the above specifications.
The upgrades in question were relatively simple by Clan standards. While an Endo-Steel structure could easily have been incorporated into what was eventually called the Defender IIC, the Clans that continued to make use of these 'Mechs had each reached the conclusion that such components were better used on front-line BattleMechs or other units likely to see heavy combat. A similar logic dictated that the single heat sinks should not be upgraded to double-strength versions, even on newly produced Defenders. However, ferro-fibrous armor with the standard built-in Clan CASE system was incorporated in order to maximize survivability The handful of jump jets mounted on the original were removed. The machine guns were each upgraded to their Clan equivalents, then doubled in number, and each laser was upgraded to a Pulse version. The 120-rated engine called for by the original schematic was left untouched.

Centuries down the line, Clan Snow Raven made newly-produced but functionally identical copies of the Defender IIC available to militia units within their new territory after their transition into the Raven Alliance. In addition, many Defender IICs can be found within the Homeworld Clans, performing security and riot control duties, and worlds liberated from the Inner Sphere Clan Occupation Zones often turned out to have at least a few of these 'Mechs in major population centers.
