The idea of lasers having greater range then ballistics came up in a discussion, and the question came up on why lasers have a greater range then ac's.
Given the fact the argument goes that you can't predict where a shell will hit at range is given. The fact we have and have had tank guns hitting pretty accurately for longer ranges then the game with smaller targeting assistance has been left out for the game.

Now lasers, even the largest ones, have to stay focused on the target for a length of time to work. The faster you and your target move, the less likely that would happen. Even closer up, you have to keep the beam on the same point for a long time relative to the combat and movement.

The subtle movements needed to focus a laser would be less likely to do damage with a laser. Even a beam the size of someone's head could not remain focused long enough on any area with a real combat movement going on. Bobbing and weaving concept here, given the novels and even history written in the game.

Second thing that came up. It will not change how things are done, but how is it the same 1 ton of armor protects the surface area of an 18 meter tall, wide load mech, that does the same for the 12 meter tall thin units?

Warships are really bad about this. Not sure if they now have limits of protection based on the size of the units as I do not have battlespace rules.

Which is why the game will not fix this issue with any armored units.
The group was looking for some suggestions for house rules dealing with both of the posts here.
