---Designer's Notes:

--- -----In 21st century America at least, the Marines are a "Land, Sea and Air" unit. Their strength is meant to be in their tactical flexibility and wide range of avenues for deployment. However, this is the 31st Century; post-3067 to be exact and mankind is once again at war. It begs the question, "In a world dominated by huge robotic war machines known as BattleMechs, what does it mean to be a 'Marine'?" The Star Marine seeks to address this question by using the 21st Century American concept of 'Marines' and incorporating into an OmniMech.

--- ---- Firstly a design breakdown of the Star Marine and it's three variants, along with it's two 'sub-variants'. The Star Marine was built as an OmniMech specifically for amphibious (land / sea), underwater, and space-borne (both attack and in support of boarding actions) combat operations. Of the three factory variants, only the SM1 and the SM2 are OmniMechs. The SM01 is a BattleMech version that retains one of the signature features of the line, it's specialized Full Head Ejection System.

--- ---- All Star Marine variants have a Full Head Ejection system worked into the design that sports an integral 1-ton storage bay for just about anything a MechWarrior could need in a bad situation. It is worth noting that this cargo space CANNOT be removed without difficulty as it is designed to allow the contents to survive the ejection process. The SM01 version differs widely in several respects; most obvious of these is that the SM01 has a Standard Cockpit, unlike the SM1 and the SM2 which sport Small Cockpits. The other is that the SM01 mounts a Rumble Seat, allowing the carriage of an additional personnel, in place of the MASS of the SM1 and 1-ton Extended Fuel Tank of the SM2.

--- ---- The SM1 Star Marine is designed for underwater and amphibious operations, sporting OmniMech Technology and three BattleMech HarJel Repair Systems; a feature it shares with it's cousin the SM2. It uses four pod-mounted BattleMech UMUs to achieve superior underwater mobility for a BattleMech, as well as allowing it to swap them out for a quartet of Standard Jump Jets if / when it makes landfall. It's armament is also custom-tailored to it's enviroment, being a pair of 6-tube Short Range Torpedoes and a pair of 10-tube Long Range Torpedoes with a ton of ammo for each launcher. Thanks to it's OmniMech construction, these launchers can be swapped out for their land-based counterparts for use in amphibious operations.

--- ---- The SM1 mounts a Reinforced Structure, and Small Cockpit alongside the ubiquitous Vlar 300 XL Fusion Engine. Although the SM2 features the Small Cockpit and Reinforced Structure of it's older relative, it is worth noting that the SM2 mounts Improved Jump Jets and a completely different engine. The nature of the Full Head Ejection Systems also renders them incompatible between variants. The SM1 makes use of a MechWarrior Aquatic Survival System, this is used in conjunction with a special device designed to turn the cockpit into an inflatable life boat. The SM1's cockpit was also designed to be easily converted for land by replacing the special UMUs with their respective rocket booster counter-parts, replacing the contents inflatable's tanks with propellant, flipping a switch and re-attaching the cockpit.

--- ---- The SM2 Star Marine, on the other hand, is a different beast entirely. Unfortunately due to it's OmniMech construction, the model SM2 Star Marine is manufactured as a separate 'Mech entirely from the SM1 Star Marine that it was derived from on account of it's use of the VOX 225 XL Fusion Engine. The SM2 variant of the Star Marine was the SM1 re-designed from the ground up solely with optimization for space operations in mind. It's five Improved Jump Jets give it excellent three dimensional mobility, despite the poorer land mobility in relation to it's cousin. Meanwhile it's more robust trio of MML-5s are supported by the inclusion of a pair of Medium Pulse Lasers. The SM2 also differs from the SM1 in that their 'sub-variants' are more diverse. Whereas the SM1L simply switches the nature of the ejection mechanism and swaps out the torpedoes for missiles, the SM2B replaces both Hand Actuators with Salvage Arms, ditches the MMLs for a 15-tube Long Range Missile Launcher with a ton of ammo and trades in the duo of Medium Pulse Lasers for a trio of Small Pulse Lasers to support space-borne EVA Boarding actions.

--- ---- MiliTech approached Clan Diamond Shark with the designs and reached a trade agreement for supplies of HarJel in exchange for a percentage of the sales and profits of the "Star Marine" as a result, all Star Marine SM1 and SM2 variants required a contract for HarJel shipments for the life of the 'Mechs in question with discounts on bulk sales. Tiered packages included repair services, replacement parts and dedicated maintenance support from MiliTech staff for heftier annual sums, but made the Star Marine much more financially appealing overall. On top of this agreement, Clan Diamond Shark also shared ownership of the SM1 and SM2 designs themselves. However, Project Battleman was not included in this agreement, leaving the sales AND design rights of the SM01 to be for the exclusive benefit of MiliTech.

--- ---- Which brings us to the final variant, the SM01, or "Battle Marine". A 75-ton BattleMech designed from the ground up as a budget friendly 'Star Marine' which encapsulated some of the finer points of that design into a Generalist BattleMech. Namely the Full Head Ejection System and it's infamous "Ton 'o Survival" survival kit. The Reinforced Structure of it's namesake is replaced with standard BattleMech internal structure, freeing up room to mount a 300-rated Light Fusion Engine and making repair / reift less of a chore as well as removing the vulnerability of the eXtraLight engine; all while maintaining the ground speed profile of the SM1. Four Jump Jets provide ample mobility for a 75-ton Heavy 'Mech, incorporated into the design in such a way as to facilitate replacement with BattleMech UMUs to give it nearly as many movement options as the 'Mech it was spawned from.

--- ---- The Star Marines cheaper step-child also fields a vastly different weapons array; a pair of Large Lasers constitutes the "Battle Marine's" primary armament, which is further supplemented by a duo of 5-tubed Multi-Missile Launchers sporting four tons of ammo; two tons of which is divided between the SM01's CASE protected side torsos. Additional close range punch is provided in the form of an accurate Medium Pulse Laser, with everything being cooled by fifteen double heat stinks. This gives it far more independence from supply lines, and by extension affords it a wider scope of combat theaters to deploy in.

--- ---- Overall and in conclusion, the Star Marine is my best crack at a specialized "Extreme Environment" BattleMech. It started as merely a project to build a dedicated underwater unit. Quickly mutatiing into an amphibious design, as the need for an underwater battlemech was effectively non-existent. However, if that same mech was an OmniMech, changing out the UMUs for Jump Jets and swapping the torpedoes for missiles would be a cinch and provide a commander with a Lance of 'Mechs that had more possible avenues of attack and / or covert movement. I would later christen it the "Star Marine" when I created the derivative 'space-based' design for those who would favor unorthodox strategies, such as House Liao in particular. A Leopard full of OmniMechs that can attack like a space-born target is a nasty surprise indeed, although on land it becomes a weird 75-ton Catapult with half the weapons, but an SRM volley from hell.

--- I sincerely hope you enjoy using these 'Mechs as much as I enjoyed creating them. I love to do unorthodox designs and would be happy to accept challenges / requests. Fell free to create derivative designs. Unfortunately, the 3067+ tech was needed to make these 'Mechs a reality. I do know the HarJel systems could be upgraded to HarJel 2 or 3s, but I wanted at least SOME plausible way for my fictional company, MiliTech, to obtain the use of it from Clan Diamond Shark. I am also aware the readouts state Inner Sphere Tech. The HarJel systems are a licensed Inner Sphere produced version, with off-brand HarJel being supplied by Clan Diamond Shark to MiliTech for sale to it's customers who bought the Star Marine. While I did state that regular shipments were part of the package deal, one could theoretically buy the HarJel ala carte from MiliTech, albeit for a jacked-up price.

The Inner Sphere HarJel systems and the 'off-brand' HarJel they use are important to consider. In the fluff it says a contract is required for purchase. Which is true, which means the damaged HarJel systems are replaced and the required HarJel resupplied for free in exchange for an annual cost.

Fine Print however gives the ala carte option, for customers not too thrilled about the idea of such a specialized 'Mech requiring such costly annual upkeep. In the fine print of the contract, you can opt to waive the annual fee and it's benefits, but the catch is this:

The Inner Sphere licensed versions of the HarJel Repair Systems will degrade rapidly if not stored loaded with HarJel. The 'off-brand' HarJel will degrade rapidly after being stored for more than year, and will degrade even faster if not stored in the HarJel systems it was designed for.

Since waiving the contracts incurs hiked prices on the HarJel and it's systems, and since the 'off-brand' HarJel doesn't keep longer than a year at best; it becomes more costly to opt out as you will still need to replace at least the HarJel annually anyway.

This percentage of the sales / profit was the crux of the deal with Clan Diamond Shark, so from a fluff perspective this is a very important detail that got lost in translation.

It would have been shorter if you would have given the fixed items, then did a configuration set up.
As an omni, pods are a good thing, but I don't know if they are water. Haven't really seen anything to suggest this, as the mechwarrior video game had the one custom built. Not even an omni.

I was going to say air tight for space, but the novels and video game has you working in space. Though they did have light thrusters to keep the mech down on a surface when in zero g.
The novels suggested they had magnetic clamp on their feet, with a myomer cord to pull them back if they did get knocked off the ground.
