Not sure if you're talking about creating a new unit article on the Sarna BattleTechWiki, or for RPG/campaign gaming purposes.

In the latter case, the rulebooks for the various editions of the MechWarrior RPG have rules for creating the players' unit, including its backstory (at least that's the case for MW2).

If you're inquiring about wiki article creation, we have two templates in place, Template:InfoBoxStateUnit and Template:InfoBoxMercUnit.
The main problem with those templates is that units change over time. Much of that information is unsuitable for infobox format and should be included in the text, such as the contract history of a given merc unit. Such data may be available for major or prominent units such as Wolf's Dragoons or Hansen's Roughriders, but most units don't have a completely mapped-out history timeline.

For me, personalizing my unit – a computer generated unit is too impersonal - before I get out the dice, maps, models, rule-books, drink and chips ….+RPG …. A fun night for all

I like spending a week working it all out

Sounds fun, but House units are generic for a reason, the units have history, but you don't get that history down to the trooper level, hence why they are house units.

18th New Avalon Guard (if they exist) aren't going to be more then one unit that falls under the Guard command structure and at some point it did something that got it a merit citation, but to break things down to company commanders and such, you don't see that very often and not for every unit in House, major units sure but minor ones, no, same for merc units the known popular ones sure, the minor ones that are cannon fodder not much really goes into those.

My group has 5 generic units, two house/clan units that we swap names for and 2 merc units and one unknown, all with basic mechs be it clan/is tech or something we cooked up ourselves. All done so as to give our characters something to go up against that doesn't cause someone to whine later on when we find out the above mention 18th New Avalon Guard was wiped out during the 2nd Succession Wars and here we are having it run around in fill in the era like nothing ever happen.

Me, Taking an existing unit, breaking it down to Company level …

I like the idea of Sorenson’s Sabres or McKinnon’s Raiders (Fox’s Teeth) …. Giving it its own history et al … a small unit that can run …. Or even the idea of a “Kelly’s Heroes” (1970 movie) FS unit …. And running through the 4SW FWL territory after gold ….
