There have been many different contracts for mercenary units within the Inner Sphere, has anyone considered the following?

Employer: The Mercenary Review Board (Either Comstar or Wolfs Dragoons depending on the era)

The Job: Renegade Hunters

Let u say that a mercenary unit has gone rogue ie. they have been charged with a crime, a court of enquiry was held and they have been found that they have a case to answer to in regards to the alleged crime – however before they could be transferred to the location of their court martial proceedings they have absconded … the Mercenary Review Board has options at this stage …

First, by placing a bounty on their head – hoping it is large enough that bounty hunters may hunt them down for the reward; or

Second, the Mercenary Review Board has hired your Unit to hunt down these renegades and return them so that they can stand trial for their crimes.

A Liaison officer of the court will be assigned to your unit to ensure that they are brought in alive - if possible – and only if they resist by using deadly force will it be acceptable for your unit to terminate the renegade unit.

Transport – The Mercenary Review Board will supply transport (unless your unit already has transport)

Remuneration – A flat fee will be provided to your unit for the contact duration;
However, In the Event you are successful and you take the unit alive a bonus will be paid per renegade unit member you bring in alive;
The interesting clauses though revolve around the salvage rights:-
If a firefight does occur (and the renegades end up dead) – you unit will be allowed, with the approval of your Liaison Officer …. Say 25% … of the renegade units Mechs et al as salvage (Irrespective if they are later found innocent … ie. you run and you will pay one way or another).
However – if you can bring them in alive and they are found guilty of the crime, as the Renegade Hunter Unit, you will be allowed 100% salvage rights to the renegade units ‘Mechs et al.

Thus the contract revolves around your Renegade Hunter Unit having to go into the Periphery / other Great House’s Space – smoke them out – and hopefully take the Renegades alive and return them for trial to get the maximum windfall for this operation.

Thoughts?

This could even end up becoming part of your unit’s resume – 3014-3015 – Renegade Hunter within Canopus Space Hunting the Renegade Unit ……

and thus the Mercenary Review Board could be said to be looking after its own and disciplining its own, as required, to ensure standards are maintained .... or else!!!!!
Get thee to Coventry … Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious by this daughter of Tharkad … Our army shall march through. Well to New Avalon tonight.

It looks like it would work, but wouldn't those that were wronged offer contracts to hunt them down?
Though I guess if you are hired by the merc board, you might be able to chase the perpetrators into another nation without incurring a full scale response.
But there is the possibility, one or more of the nations would use that as a precursor to invade, or raid another state.
Not sure if either comstar or the Dragoons would guarantee that.
And you may have issues with the DC right as the Dragoons starting the merc board on Outreach. They were still hostile to each other.

I would have to say, this would be more for larger units, as I doubt a lance could take on a company or higher.

What, if anything, would be the repair and rearm terms be for the unit?
All paid for by the unit?
Or would the board fix the mercs equipment for free? Percentage of the costs?

One last thing for now.
Wouldn't this fall under pirate hunting? Or be used to send them after pirates?

Yes they could …. Thus you are now in a race to see who can find and apprehend them first. Or even hold onto them or even save them from a lynch mob who’s aim is to string them up. (A very wild, wild west theme game?)

As for a state attempting to use this as a precursor to an invasion , sorry I don’t think so, First you would have to get the Mercenary review Board to sign off on it (and that would be difficult considering they would have to be verifiable evidence of a crime). Second opposing houses security departments would be viewing these public accusations of multiple mercenary groups, all at the same time, committing crimes with a pinch of salt and if they are then seeking asylum within a different house (especially if they have a very bad reputation).

As for DC – when the Dragoons were starting the Merc Board on outreach – was this not also the time they (the DC) had “the Death to Mercenaries” standing order, thus not a problem?

This game could be for all levels in my opinion – Lance on lance – or – company on Company – I cannot see it for just the larger units only.

The repair and rearm costs will be ‘born’ by the unit hunting the renegades themselves – a further incentive to bring them in alive and to get the big bonus.

No, I wouldn’t classify them as pirate hunting – as the unit in question has not committed an act of piracy. They have just been accuses of a crime then fled before the mercenaries review board trial could commence – thus in all likelihood they are guilty and are now on the run.
