It only takes one inept ruler to lose the empire to a coup d’etat.

I doubt Kerensky could have had an impact upon the government’s bureaucracy.
Though even when you have inept ministers in charge of their individual departments they somehow continue on.

By appointing ministers and keeping the Star Leagues Government working and appointing a new head of government either in the form of a council or a political marriage there is hope for the continued existence of the Star League. It is only when these departments cease to exist does this spell the death knell of the Star League.

I do not know the state of readiness of the 113 divisions – I would assume there is an era report post about this, but as yet I have not acquired this one – though if I remember correctly approximately 100 divisions went with Kerensky and in a secret deal the remaining forces remained behind in service with Blake’s ComStar, thus forming the ComGuard.

(This would have been very hard on these forces remaining on Terra, hidden away, watching the First Succession War and knowing they were disallowed to do anything to stop it – all their work during the Kerensky-Amaris Civil War was for nothing as the majority of the STDF had turned their back upon humanity and any hope of keeping it safe from the vanity and greed of the Great Houses was gone – with Kerensky’s exodus the last person who could have stopped the war just gave up and left – thus over time I would expect the name Kerensky would have become a curse word and synonymous with the phrase of someone who turns their back and walks away from an important problem/issue

Though on a side note I am surprised no-one called him out on his decision to leave and called him a coward!

This shows, however, that there was a strong Cult of Personality within the SLDF and little to nil understanding as to duty and honour towards the end – as if they had understood duty and honour they would have remained and attempted to keep the Star League together no matter what the repercussions would have been).
Get thee to Coventry … Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious by this daughter of Tharkad … Our army shall march through. Well to New Avalon tonight.

It is the most infamous action throughout history, when the defender of humanity General Aleksandr Kerensky decided upon the exodus rather than attempting to save the Inner Sphere from the impending Succession War ... as to whom should be the next First Lord.

The General has just gone through a war with Amaris that was driven only by a sense of justice and revenge.

You can make the assumption his exit strategy form the Civil War was in the hope that one individual of the Cameron line escaped and could be elevated to the position of First lord.

Aleksandr was born on December 16, 2700

He met his future wife Katyusha in 2749. Following her retirement from the SLDF they married in 2759 – Aleksandr is now 58 years old.

His eldest son, Nicholas, was born May 4th, 2764 - Aleksandr is now 63 years old

His youngest son, Andery, was born November 9th 2766 – Aleksandr is now 65 years old

The thought of combining spring to winter comes to mind here – the age gap is vast and understanding each other due to this gap would have been even harder.

The Amaris-Kerensky Civil War lasted from 2766 to 2779 – 13 years – he is now 79 years old.

His children will have no memory of him, they will grow up within a Russian’ resistance movement with their mother. The family reunites when Nicholas is either 14 or 15 and Andery is either 12 or 13 years old.

Andery is perhaps young enough to come through this with only “minor” psychological issues. However as for Nicholas his age and his subsequent actions you can see he came through not only the Civil War but also the subsequent years where he remained upon Terra whilst disavowing his heritage as Aleksandr’s son he succumbed to a “major” psychological psychosis.

With the discovery that the entire Cameron Line was dead, I am of the belief Aleksandr suffered a breakdown with the loss of his hope for the future. Thus in a fit of rage and vengeance he ordered the death of the entire Amaris family – men, women children irrespective of their age or complicity during the war years. (Note: this act alone should have been considered a war crime, but was overlooked due to the actions of one man who was the head of the family – His action, he would have been perfectly aware of, to kill off an entire family would also doom any hope of the Rim Worlds Republic to survive in any form whatsoever – thus increasing the suffering on the ‘alter’ of War).

Then in 2780 the Council Lords stripped him of his title as “Protector” – one can only wonder how he took this – A blow to his ego, an onset of deeper depression? – the question must be asked if his hubris, vanity or ego was so scarred at this act that subconsciously he may have decided that if they (The Council Lords) have given up on him he would give up on them or if it was his age (79 years old) and he was tired of it all or was it a combination of these?

Thus the clandestine meeting of his officers within a wooden Warehouse, 14 February 2784, and his exercise in using his Cult of Personality to convince the Army to disregard their duty as “protectors of humanity’s greatest achievement the Star League” and plan for their exodus (cut and run). He did not allow them time to even consider what he was proposing, they were just acting out his orders – he kept them busy and on task – one can only wonder how much debate was even discussed as to the action Aleksandr was proposing was even made, as they are soldiers and soldiers do not question the orders of their Hero Generals they follow them without question.

Thus on 8 July (just 5 months after he proposed his plan) he gave the famous Exodus order - he is now 83 years old, Nicholas is 20 years old (old enough and intelligent enough to understand what is going on) and Andery is 17 years old (in for the ride?).

And now only during the Exodus are Nicholas and Andery allowed to declare their true names and their true lineage – thus it is evident as to sources of Nicholas’ deeply rooted megalomania and his desire to destroy all that his father considered precious. (As he was taken away without any regard to what he wanted only what his father wanted and by a distant and in his opinion an uncaring father who was old enough to be his grand-father).
Get thee to Coventry … Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious by this daughter of Tharkad … Our army shall march through. Well to New Avalon tonight.

Could it be, Nicholas thought he would be raised to the first lord position?
And that is why he got upset with the exodus?

Then Alexander may have told those that followed him into the exodus, they would return when the houses beat each other senseless, and needed a strong army to stop it as well as bring order to the war zones?
The officers he talked to, may well have been sick of the house lords crap, and wanted nothing to do with the war that would break out. I will assume most of them were part of the Civil war as well as involved in the periphery wars.
Then again, following Kerensky would allow them to keep their oath, as they would see him as the real First Lord, even though he declined it.
The alternative?
Die in the mad attacks against the other house and the grabs for the hemogeny worlds that were the center of the League itself. No real chance to survive what so ever.
Not saying cowards, but sick of war. And they may well have known there would be no clear winners for a while into the future.

Remember Nicholas is a very highly intelligent young man by the time of his father’s return – and in all probability too intelligent for his own good – I believe that when he was younger he was probably bookish and a bit of a dreamer (… I doubt he could ever understand why his father did not take his family with him on campaign, as if he had he would have been part of the great Crusade, (this in all probability would have been a recurring dream of his – as a knight standing beside his father fighting the forces of evil) and in a better place than that of being stuck in the cold of Russia whilst being constantly hunted by Amaris’ forces).

That is until the day he got involved with his mother’s resistance cell, at which point he would have had to have grown up … fast – during this time the emphasis of his learning would have been all things a covert military spy would need to know – he became a leader but he also became agile in manipulating people for his own ends.

However with the General’s, Aleksandr Kerensky, return Aleksandr would have made it quite clear to both Nicholas and Andery when he explained to them why he could not legitimize (inform the Inner Sphere) of their existence at that time in regards to the current political situation. They must remain hidden, so that they would not become a pawn to one of the Great Houses machinations when it came to the succession of the First Lord.

To Nicholas this would have further deepened the rift between him and his father as he would have viewed his father’s response as a betrayal / a rejection of their very existence and of a lifelong dream - the one thing he had always wanted above that of anything else the love and respect of his “legendary” father.

Nicholas would have viewed this as being pushed aside, marginalised as the State comes first, he always a very distant second – the crushing reality of a childhood dream that his father would one day come and make everything right – thus a betrayal of everything he should have been – in his eyes he (Nicholas) should have been viewed by all as ‘Prince’ of the realm as the Great General’s son and heir to his legacy, but in reality he was treated as just another “nobody” who could only watch from afar ( via. Television / media only) as his father moved exalted circles – always present within the media but never by his side.

Feelings of being rejected and unwanted must have consumed him (Nicholas) to the point his only desire was to bring everything and everyone his father considered more important than him would be brought low – and once they had been brought low his father must then recognise him not only as his son but also as his superior in all things – the seed of his desire was planted to be greater than his father ever was, vengeance consumed him.

However, being forced upon the Exodus he was finally granted one of his wishes of being legitimised and with being legitimised it granted him real power – real power to first remove anyone who were an impediment between himself and his father – first his brother with Prinz Eugen incident – thus solidifying his right to viewed as heir making him closer to his father than that of his rival for his father’s affection – and when it was his turn to rule he would ensure the destruction of everything his father held most dear … the Star League and everything that represented.

Thus in some ways Nicholas had a dual personality, he was always yearning for his father’s affection and attention … always the child wanting to be loved by his father at his core … but also at the same time he also wanted to destroy him for the perceived indignities his father brought upon him.

Over time this dual personality became him – First the Great Leader - General Aleksandr Kerensky’s eldest son and heir – Second, the destroyer of anything and anyone he perceived was a treat to his power and his dream of destroying his father’s ultimate dream of a Star League.

Thus over time Nicholas nurtured his dual personality megalomania to a point where only extremely violent and final solutions were required when he believed his authority was being challenged in any way.

Yes in a manner of speaking, General Aleksandr Kerensky did issue a very famous proclamation, General Order 13 the Hidden Hope Doctrine, in that one day they would return to the Inner Sphere one day to liberate it from the House Lords who betrayed (not only him) but also the Star League.

Give it a read on wiki. Under Hidden Hope Doctrine.

As for the Officers of the Star League – I believe they thought they were doing the right thing as they believed in the infallibility of General Aleksandr Kerensky – in reality this was more a cult of personality – thus without giving the issue due consideration they just accepted it as an order and welt along with the ‘order’. Any dissenters would have quickly found themselves either marginalised or worse, beaten, for daring to go against the Generals’ order – Peer group pressure (conformity) would have ensured all but the most highest of ranks would have had the right to question.

I doubt General Aleksandr Kerensky would have ever allowed anyone to express the opinion that he was the heir to the title of First Lord – he was the “Great Protector’ nothing more! His followers would have seen him in this singular role.

As for the alternatives … because he (General Aleksandr Kerensky) was rejected by the Great Lords as Protector, he would reject the Great Lords and their followers as he was also just too tired to keep up the fight.

There were options but he failed in even the attempt to hold the Star League together as he slowly viewed the attempt as pointless.

Even when there is no clear winner his position was to hold the line, not to cut and run – remember King Leonidas of Sparta and the Battle of Thermopylae at the Hot Gates.

Though they all died over time theirs was an example and a light to forge the world we now find ourselves in.

Remember there is always options, the real trick is to find them and act upon them at the right time and place in history even at the ultimate cost.

His death in battle keeping the peace and preserving the Star League could have brought about a reformation as the people throughout the entire Inner Sphere had thrown off their shackles of being part of one House or another – “A Star League Spring” movement.

As it is not about who ‘wins’ or who ‘looses’ it is about the journey and what is learnt on that journey to peace / understanding and brotherhood that truly matters.
Get thee to Coventry … Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious by this daughter of Tharkad … Our army shall march through. Well to New Avalon tonight.
