Designer's Blurb:
-------------------------

--- During the EDX-7's development during the Dark Age, the Republic of the Sphere used old Star League data to design a Black-Ops support 'Mech. However, the plans for the EDX-0 never made it into the hands of the Republic, indeed they never made it past the Civil War. All records of this cheaper-than-an-Awesome sneaky stealth support 'Mech were destroyed prior to the fall of the Star League, and almost all of the few existing models were thermite bombed into oblivion along with them. Almost... It was no accident that the Word of Blake were building such a design, they had found a cache of complete development records which had escaped destruction as well as the source data left behind by the Terran Hegemony's early experiments into the concept. They also found four pristine EDX-0 models that were secreted away in a Brian Cache, in addition to a pair maintained by ComStar for the support of their ROM Operatives which lacked the advanced stealth systems.

--- However, prior to the fall of the Word of Blake, these four models along with the complete documents were secreted away to a far flung black site in the Deep Periphery, while the Word of Blake's R&D arm worked with copies of the data and the two former ROM models. Both of these original EDX-0s were successfully destroyed before the fall of Terra, but the data was not completely erased. Damage to the facilities during the fighting resulted in a massive loss of the records kept, with widespread data corruption damaging the rest. A single variant based off the EDX-0, dubbed the EDX-6 survived destruction by the very same damage, and would form the basis of the EDX-7 designed and later fielded by the Republic of the Sphere.

--- Yet somewhere out there in the Deep Periphery, securely nestled within a secret Word of Blake facility, lies the original four EDX-0s. Sequestered alongside them, a treasure trove of technical data, the complete blueprint of not only the EDX-0 itself, but the full development records of both the SLDF's and Terran Hegemony's forays into a black-ops support 'Mech. Moreover, found among the records kept during the development of the EDX-6, dubbed the "Master's Edge", was reference to an old SLDF ruin. No co-ordinates were found, no names and no systems were mentioned with efforts by the Republic to find it having all ended in failure.

--- Maybe the Word of Blake never left the hole where they dug up those four EDX-0s in the first place... maybe it had been there all along and ever since the days of the Star League had merely been awaiting some intrepid and lucky somebodies to come and happen across it. Maybe, just maybe, those four weren't the only ones to survive. And maybe with a little digging you too could have a lance of these sneaky, cheeky little 40-Ton bastards to slice, dice and roast the tanks and foot soldiers of your foes...

Or mebbe I'm full of ****? Who can say? ...oh wait, me, because I freakin' wrote all this dribble.

le sigh

--- Anyways, the EDX-0 if you haven't already guessed, is a 40-ton Light 'Mech that is about five tons too heavy to be considered one. It's a Star League design along the lines of a Sneak Suit, intended for limited deployments alongside special operations units to support them against vehicles, infantry and to a lesser extent against fixed fortifications. It was also ideal for razing and ambushes on lightly defend or important, but unsuspecting convoys, as well as the assassination of VIPs and other "wet work". It enabled operatives to have a highly mobile and well equipped squad support platform, affording extraction teams, commando units and the like a means of engaging dug in forces, tanks, Machine Gun Nests and the like. The Chameleon Light Polarization Shield and the Null Signature System would let an EDX-0 penetrate deep behind enemy lines and provide tactical mobility when in the service of a more guerrilla-style fighting force. While the EDX-0 technically requires ammo, the .50 Machine Guns typically were not too hard to re-supply in the field and could be loaded from within the cockpit without the use of a Mech Bay... albeit with at least SOME difficulty in getting the rounds all the way up there in the first place.

--- Likewise the EDX-0 made a great urban fighter, particularly when collateral damage was not a consideration. It's stealth, combined with it's pair of Flamers and trio of .50 Caliber Machine Guns would make short work of infantry. Meanwhile, this same stealth when factored in with the BattleMechs seven tons of armor and extreme speed allowed the two Medium Lasers to act as sufficient armament against most other Light 'Mechs of it's era, and certainly against any light vehicles it may encounter. Even moderately fortified positions could fall under one or two EDX-0s when acting in tandem with special forces. The EDX-0 also sported a feature it's later Republic of the Sphere model would not, indeed a feature which would save the project from cancellation; a little piece of internal propaganda that would very nearly have been a reality. The EDX-0 sported a rumble seat, allowing four lances the ability to insert and extract up to sixteen men at a time and also enabling a single EDX-0 to extract a lone intelligence agent if needs be.

--- These features, combined with the relatively low cost of such a specialized unit, made the EDX-0 a highly successful 'Mech. In addition, although it sported the advanced Null Signature System and Chameleon Light Polarization Shield, the EDX-0 was built using otherwise mundane components. Standard BattleMech Grade armor mounted to the Standard BattleMech Grade structure of the EDX-0's chassis and powered by a 280-Rated Standard Fusion Engine, the unit was surprisingly durable and easy to maintain despite it's advanced features. Add in the mundane nature of it's weapons systems and you have the perfect 'Mech for operations deep behind enemy lines. Indeed a number of EDX-0s without their fancy gear were built for low level command elements of SLDF Light Lances and for support elements of SLDF garrisons.

--- These watered down versions would also see anti-personnel duty and vehicle hunting missions with SLDF Medium Lances, as well as widespread export and deployment to the Great Houses under as the model VG-8ND Vagabond. The robust design of the export off-shoot would continue in common use until the factories producing them would begin to see a number of serious, and mysterious, "accidents"; severely hindering the continued proliferation and maintenance of the VG-8ND Vagabond. It didn't help that those who piloted these 'Mechs met with terrible fates more often than not, along with the designs often suffering from less than normal "maintenance failures". Eventually the design would become exceedingly rare, with her pilots and indeed the 'Mech itself becoming very stigmatized. This was not helped by the LosTech status of the design's Double Heat Sinks, truly the only piece of advanced gear left on them; although the VG-8ND admittedly did not need them nearly as much as the EDX-0, with most buyers told that they were for "extra robustness and imporved performance in extremely hot conditions."
