Re-Ranged

What do you think? Would the effect of reworking the ranges have a postive or negative effect on the game? What impact would it have on the way mechs are designed?

Suggested Range change: All weapons now have the same range catagories but retain their maximum ranges. (Feel free to suggest a range distribution you feel would be more appropriate.)

I really don't like this idea, for the same reason I don't like the ranges in Battlespace: They remove the most significant advantage of long-range weapons over short-range ones.

Considering how sick some of the short-range weapons already are...

A different way to rework ranges...
All weapons now have 1 range--a "base" range, roughly equal to long range / 3. This is usually a weapon's short range, but for weapons where it isn't some fudging is required.
Then...
Range to target is less than or equal to, modifier is
.5x -1
1x 0
1.5x +1
2x +2
2.5x +3
3x +4
MaxTech ranges
3.5x +6 (+5?)
4x +8 (+6?)
This gives you some of the simplification of BS/AT2 (where you only have one value that determines range, a boon for tables) but still the each-weapon-has-its-own-range goodness of BT.
