Overview:

After a couple of Succession Wars Orguss Industries was called
upon to build an effective light mech for urban combat and had
quickly came up with the Urbanmech. Orguss executives have always
been satisfied with their Urbie, as they affectionally call it. The
Urbanmech was so easy and cheap to produce that combined with its
ruggedness for city fighting they didn't feel a need to improve on
it. Others vehemetly disagreed pointing out how the Urbanmechs
inability to mount a larger engine for better speed and its design
overall gave it limited options in battle and had to heavily rely on
other units to support it.

Engineers proposed that they could build a new mech to support
the Urbanmech and complement its strengths and weaknesses just like
how the Rifleman and Crusader have proven to be complementary mechs in
combat. It took some arm twisting but the higher ups eventually
allowed their designers to try out this special project and would
give them limited support. This limited support would prove crucial
for the designers plans as they desired to acquire a PTR-8Z
Panther.

Analysis of this mech from old Star League records have shown
that as a fire support platform for recon units it has performed
pretty well but it simply lacked punch with its Sentanta large laser.
While the large laser may have been the source of both of its strengths
and weaknesses the designers desired to model a mech like the 8Z Panther
but on a much smaller chasis so it can be as cheap to produce as the
UrbanMech. Roadblocks were put up though when they tried requesting
for the 8Z which was becoming very rare among the Houses. Noone
wanted to part with their destroyed as well as their intact models
because the destroyed mechs can still be stripped for parts to repair
the highly more sophisticated Star League components that can't be
reproduced at the time.

To circumvent this problem the Orguss execs managed to make an
agreement with House Liao, their biggest buyer, to supply them with
whatever partially destroyed PNT-9R Panthers they had. Alshain
Weapons is the only company that produces Panthers and has after
awhile garnered a deal to sell their 9Rs exclusively to the Combine.
Yet there was a brief time Alshain has sold to other Houses. More
importantly, a series of wars has seen the proliferation of 9Rs as
they changed hands to Federated Suns and Lyran Forces who salvaged or
captured quite a few from the Combine. Since the Panthers didn't
follow through very well at all with Davion war philosophy (unlike
Steiner) their Panthers were pushed along to the weaker Cappellen
Borders so they atleast won't be wasted in battle fighting the
Dracs.

Orguss Industries was shipped enough Panthers from the Cappellans
to get a very good idea of how this mech was constructed. On top of
that they also later received design schematics on the more
sophisticated 8Z model from knowledge gleamed from the Grey Death
Memory Core. Such a gift was in of itself a significant sign of the
good relations between the two entities that have gained and received
support from one another.

With so much knowledge and desire at their disposal, the Orguss
designers went to great lengths to create their new light mech to
support their Urbie. Their efforts have resulted in the reshaping of
Orguss Industries policies towards each house and the creation of the
venerable and wildly popular UrbanFury.

Capabilities:
The UrbanFury, or Furbie for short, was fashioned after the Panther
with some serious design considerations.

The UrbanFury as the exact opposite of the Urbanmech runs at the
fastest possible speed of 85 kph that is suitable for city fighting.
Combined with Anderson Propulsion 25 jump jets it is very nimble design
made to get into postions that allows it to flank other units in the city.
It utilizes a Sunglow Large Laser to punch serious holes in a mech and to
dictate from what distance it will engage an opponent. Its true form of fighting
support actually comes from its Free World's League imported
Flame Tech flamers which serve not only as an anti-infantry tool but
also a means to slow down other enemy mechs to the point that the
Urbanmech's very own speed deficiencies will become less of a
hinderance in battle because now the enemy would become as sluggish
as it already is.

Its low and very thin profile allows the UrbanFury to move away
quickly from trouble by ducking into alleyways that even some of the
heavier light mechs can't traverse. Unfortuneately while the designers
have done their best to balance out the weight distribution of the
mech, its large laser has become a hinderance after receiving any
amount of moderate damage. Yet when the Star League knowledge was
given to them, they saw how the 9R was excessivley simplified and
have come up with a way to offset the balance issues with an improved
gyro stabilization techniques. Another thing they improved upon the
9R's simplicity was by creating a modular gun port. The Large laser
can be held now in either hand so if one is lopped off the other can
pick it up.

This in itself required another overhaul on the original
UrbanFury which had originally placed its flamers and heatsinks on
the opposite arm to offset the weight of the large laser.

It took a few years to do it right but their efforts created
one of the most sophisticated light mechs to grace the IS since the
Star League.

Deployment:

The Cappellans were highly impressed with Orguss Industries' new
mech made to complement the Urbanmech, which is very common in their
region of space. It was very efficent and durable for its weight and
it didn't cost that much more than an Urban mech.

In recognition of this powerful design and their growing
relations Orguss has agreed to temporarily make their mech
exclusively for the Confederation in return for the Confederation's
considerable efforts in helping them.

This mech was deployed rapidly along and deeply within the
Confederation borders. After recent border battles with the Federated
Suns a few UrbanFuries were captured by the Davion forces.

Known Variants:

When the Federated Suns enountered the UrbanFury, they were
astounded by what they thought was a cheap backward throwback
imitation of the Panther. The effectiveness of these machines were on
par to the Panther even if it had 60% of its forebears weight and
combined with the maligned Urbanmech made these machines a
considerable threat to their forces as they tried gaining control of
cities.

They were further impressed by the sophistication in the models
in how they are much closer to the ancient PTR-8Z than even the
PTR-9R. The Federated Suns never really impressed with the Urbanmech
still bought qutie a few of them because of how cheap they were
surprised Orguss for huge demands on the UrbanFury. Orguss
unforetuneately had to refuse especially since the Federated Suns
were embroiled with a war with the Confederation.

This angered the Fed Suns deeply over the refusal but knew they
didn't have much leverage; especially since Orguss was bound by
contract. Yet they wouldn't be bound by contract forever so they made
a deal with Orguss to further the sophistication of the UrbanFury if
they didn't fully enforce upon themselves the exclusivity that
they gave the Confederation for the time being when their contract was up.
It took some work and a lot of politiking but Orguss eventually conceeded
on the possibility to improve on their holdings and investments.

The Confederation didn't like the deal that was made but it would
soon to prove to benefit them as much if not even more than the
Federation.

The Federated Suns military, as impressed as they were with the UrbanFury
felt it could be further improved by doing away with the design
considerations of supporting the Urbanmech so that it can act as a
stand alone vehicle. They decreased its speed to a very respectable
64 kph to have more weight for weapons and gear. They took out the
Anderson Propulsion 25 jump jets and upgraded them to Anderson
Propulsion 30s which gave it a jumping capacity of 120 meters instead
of 90.

An even more significant change came from their version of the
Furbie's weapons array. The modular gun component was redesigned into
a special SRM6 launcher that can fire over 150 rounds of various
munitions like infernos and smoke rounds as well as standard rounds.
The Launcher in of itself can take several critical hits from weapons
fire without being fully destroyed but the weapon unlike other
launchers builds up considerable more heat.

Another more serious flaw in the SRM gun is that it is too heavy
for it to balance the gun with one hand while moving, so it has to
use to hands to hold the gun steadily while o the move. If it loses
an arm it can still fight but it forces the mech to stagger around
the battlefield like a drunken brawler. Sure it may be funny to see a
mech sway side by side constantly trying to gain a proper footing.
Sure it may be funny how it litterally sprawls on the floor after
taking weapons fire. But it's never fun to be the actual pilot that has
to try to get up as if it had a hang over while anything heavier than a
Hunchback was bearing down on it during their drunken stupor.

Since the Federated philosophy of war regards Autocannons
as the most proper anti infantry weaponry and for better striking power the
flamers were removed in favor of Martell Medium Lasers.

This new varient allowed the Davions to increase the amount of
armor it can hold.

The second variant was developed by the Draconis Combine who
captured some of the new types of UrbanFuries later on from the
Federated Suns.

The Combine was surprised as well by the sophistication of the
design and have demanded from Alshain weapons an explanation for
their inability or lack of desire to atleast update the 9R models
into something the 8Zs were like. The introduction of the UrbanFury
to DC space had soured relations for the two a little bit but Alshain
execs managed to salvage the situation by making a deal with Orguss
Industries.

Alshain had plans to improve on the Panther from what was
gathered from the Star League information the Combine had given them
but they had other plans by creating a design superior to both
models. So to placate the Combine they went to Orguss and created a
partnership to help further improve on the UrbanFury.

The S99K model is the most powerful version of the Urbanfury in
existence. Alshain recognizing the flaw in both of the original
version as well as the D model helped Orguss to create two lighter
guns that would offset the flaws of the much larger single guns.

Each gun is made up of two Diplan 3B medium lasers and a
SperryBrowning machine gun. Each provide considerable medium ranged
fire power with a reasonable amount of heat build up and improved
balanced proportions. This variant is as agile as the C model and
carries more armor. The only serious flaw is that the machine gun
ammo is fed to the guns a gun jacket akin to the straps of chain
guns. It was designed well enough that the jacket reaching fromaround
the back of its head and draping over its shoulders won't explode if
caught by weapons fire but it is vulnerable and gives an opponent the
chance of cutting down its firepower before it can be in range to use
them.

A favored tactic allowed by the K model is to use the machine
guns as a tracer for the medium lasers improving the weapons overall
accuaracy for manuevers that could throw off the mechs aim
considerably like jumping.

While the S99K has now become as common in Confederation space as
the S33C model, the S99K and S66D are exclusive to the Combine and
Fed Suns respectively.

Unknown to other Houses for quite awhile, Flame Tech was very
interested in what Orguss could possibly have been up to buying their
flamers and sent spies to infiltrate Orguss. When the prototype of
the UrbanFury was developed they saw it for the linchpin market tool
to expand into mech manufacturing. The Flame Tech spies gathered
design schematics for the Urbanfury and sent it to their
designers.

This UrbanFury being based on the prototype made right before the
Cappellans gave Orguss the 8Z Panther designs looks significantly
different from the UrbanFury even moreso than the S99K model that was
made afterwards.

This model utilizes the very powerful and flexible Magna
Longbow-15 Launcher. They recognized how the Fury can be a very
useful support mech for garrison and light mech forces but they felt
that the upclose nature of the design would make the FWL forces hate
it more than anything else. So with the Longbow, it can provide a
significant amount of indirect as well as direct fire to ensure it
sold well. Both by design and a desire to avoid direct criticism from
Orguss for stealing their design they mounted the Longbow in the
torso because it was too heavy to be mounted even in both hands and
it helped make it look even more dissimilar to the updated
UrbanFury.

Backing up the LRM system are a pair of wrist mounted Magna Mark
I small lasers. This was more for anti-infantry work because it was
never meant to face actual mechs in combat and the only ones that
could approach this S11M model without detection are infantry.

I dunno...for city fighting, the most important thing is simply having jump capability. The limited range would be a slight detriment, but IMO, the extra firepower is more important.

I`d imagine a city-fighter would AVOID flamers at all costs.

Not neccessarily true. The defenders will want to win at all costs. Besides it's not like there haven't been several precedents already for line and garrison troops in tearing apart cities while slugging it out.

This design is eerily remniscient of the Commando... Do not ask me why, but I keep on thinking of the Commando when I read this. Maybe because I played MechCommander over the weekend...

What's with this popping up? The last post was two years ago! This is really odd!
Why argue if the glass is half full or half empty, when you know someone is going to knock it over and spill it anyways.

And you're not seeing the spam because I usually delete the spam messages fairly quickly. The thread, however, is left marked as if it had a new post.
