Problem claiming people

I made an empire recently and tried to fight in arenas and such.
It seems that I have to claim the units to fight but I can't seem to claim anybody at all.
Before I might have accidentally unclaimed myself, but I managed to go back into the game.
Can anybody help me? Must I increase my rank or anything? By the way I have no idea how to increase my rank or change the CO of my units. Especially infantry such that I become their CO instead of some generic soldier.

From your very first screen depicting your Empire, near the middle bottom is a line that reads: To view your empire settings click here.
Click on the "here" and it takes you to a new screen where you can set your internal taxes or change the max rank to whatever you like. Cheers!

thanks for the info
but there's still one major problem I can't get over, I can't claim people at all. Is it solvable by me or must some admin help me?
Sorry cos I screwed up while trying to increase rank.
I know how to do that now but now i can't claim people

set your max rank to major, this will allow you to claim people of any rank

wat i meant was I cannot claim, I know how to but I can't
When I go to claim people, I get the send a message to your emperor asking for permission. But I'm the emperor, however the game does not recognise me as the emperor.
The reason for this is because I unclaimed myself accidentally, realised my error and went to log in immediately, however the damage has already been done.
So I'm asking if its possible to reinstate myself as the emperor or I must start a new empire.

so you HAVE claimed the emperor? if you haven't then claim him.
if not, I don't know what to tell you.

i know what the problem is
he unclaimed the emperor and is now a lesser character like a private or sergeant, and he probably didnt set up his max rank....
in this case you will need to start a new empire
