Where'd my terrain go?
      #41207 - 10/21/02 11:26 PM (217.225.102.165)

Oi! Now none of my zones have generated terrain!

That's most definitely _not_ funny. I actually bought the weapons based on the terrain in those zones. E.g., there's no ****** point in having a company of expensive Partisan AC/2's if I end up with lots of hills or woods when I generate the terrain again.

Now I do understand that there was a database structure change, but it would have been nice to convert and import the old terrain into the new database.

Thats nothing when I was defending my empire awhile back the terrian changed everytime I refreshed the battlefield definatly not fun.
I do however agree with you lets have the terrian back the way it was I've only just got my defence sorted I don't need to be doing it again.

The terrain database (20 GB Hard drive!) is periodically flushed when the drive is in dange of filling up. This prevents LW from stalling, like it did for a long while when the database first stalled.

That, however, still doesn't make me happy at all.

It introduces a possibility that my terrain and carefully placed troops will be reset just before someone attacks me, and my wheeled LRM vehicles will now be in thick woods at the bottom of a hole. In fact, there's a good probability that someone gets the idea "hey, cool, the terrain has been reset. Let's attack someone now." (I know _I_ got that idea.) That's a risk that I can do without.

Don't get me wrong, I do understand that there's war in the game and everything. I'm not asking to be invulnerable or anything. But while I could accept being wiped out because of my own stupidity (like because I placed the wrong troops in the wrong places), I'm not thrilled at the idea of being punished just because the system periodically throws a brain-fart and forgets terrain.

And dunno, that it fills a 20 GB hard drive still isn't reason enough to accept a buggy system. There are ways around that.

For starters a larger hard drive comes to mind. A quick trip to Seagate's online store says an 80 GB 7200 RPM hard drive is 139$. On Western Digital's site, they have an 120 GB 7200 RPM drive for $182. I'm sure both can be found cheaper than that, but I wasn't in the mood to do an extensive search at the moment. Do I need to write "for a new terrain DB hard drive" on my next donation, or should I order it personally?

Then there are always coding optimizations which don't need a new hard drive. Compression, for example. There are libraries for Zip compression for most languages ever invented. But even that is a brute force approach. You can also just save the parameters used to generate the terrain in the first place -- e.g., the random number generator seed -- and re-create the terrain from those. Voila, you just saved a whole map in less space than any compression algorithm could produce.
