i lost a hole lance of vehicles because there was no update of the explorer. I just created an arena, a lot of minutes nothing happend. With a secound explorer window a switched to the arena main window and was very surprised because a was attacked. I switched back to the fighting arena and updated manually the browser window. Oh look, it was right, someone attacked me and he has killed 3 of 4 vehicles and there was nothing i could do because i never knew that i was attaked 
[censored], a hole lance, for my level 1 empire it's VERY hard to lost a hole lance without any chance to react

The first thing you want to check is that your IE is set up correctly. If you don't know what they should be, there is a link on the page that you log in on to them. But the setting that specifically deals with your problem, is that you have to go to Tools | Internet Options and click on the Settings button under Temporary Internet Files. Make sure that Every Visit To Page is the option you are using...

the arenas do this from time to time (or alot depending on time of day) you have to watch the timer. If it is not ticking or exceds 20 the map is messed up and you need to refresh it
