A long time ago I found a game on the net called Titans of Steel (TOS). It is based on an old Amiga game called Mechforce, for any that remember it. It allows you to put together a team, buy (or build!) mechs and off you go to the arenas. The last free version is 1.4, and does support multiplay. Up to 4 players can play against each other on two teams. Sorry, no free-for-all.
Information can be found at http://www.titansofsteel.de or at http://www.matrixgames.com/games/titansofsteel2/. It can be a little confusing, but there is a pretty good group in the forum at Matrix Games, and they are always glad to help out newbies.
Now, mind you this isn't the BT universe, and the weapons have been modified and tweaked for game balance purposes. Like machine guns still do 2 damage, but at point-blank range (0), they do 4. It is a very good combat system that has had me hooked for a long time. I recomend this to anyone who likes strategy with their 40-odd ton walking tank...
