House Ogg Debates: The Economy

"Most honorable members of the Domestic Council," First Lord Ogg squared his shoulders as he prepared to deliver his address, "...It has been nearly a year since our arrival on this planet. Since then our population has increased ten fold, our soldiers have recieved training far beyond what we thought we could provide, and our income is increasing rapidly.

However, my good friends, our economy is not in the condition that it should be. We are still barely eeking out a meager existance on a Small-Empire Subsidy income, and weeks have been known to pass before we are able to aquire new equipment. As a solution, I wish to suggest that we freeze all acquisitions of military assets while they are still more than enough to defend our territories. My proposition contains an aggressive concentration on building residential and commercial facilities that will in turn provide us with a more rapidly increasing tax income and commercial revenue. We have a great deal of empty land that if not properly developed I fear may go to waste. I have calculated our asset to asset-protection ratio, and I have found our borders to be quite secure. With recent acquisitions of heavy-armor units and our infantry units returning after special-operations and heavy-weapons training, I feel that we are secure enough to focus squarely on development for the people. Gentlemen of the Council, you must understand that we do not want a military protectorate on this planet. We simply wish to live free. I urge your support in this matter, and I will gladly accept bids for construction and development rights." With that the First Lord breathed a sigh of relief at the round of applause he received as the Domestic Council was made primarily of local business owners eager to taste the fruits of their labor, not to mention to obtain a lucrative government contract.

"Your Highness, " David Jones of Gurvin and Jones, Inc. was the first to stand, "...as a member of the Domestic Council, and a business owner myself, I am glad to see that you have decided to pay more attention to your people than to the Expansionist war-machine. Although we clearly understand the need for secure borders and have even come to this planet expecting that we should either invade or be invaded, all of the military might on Neveron or in the House of Ogg does us no good if we are unable to fund it's use. Also, we are clearly uncomfortable at the need for a Small Empire Subsidy income, as it is a hinderance to our growth as a nation and as an independent state. To help us to throw off the shackles of indebtedness, I shall have my own company prepare bids for the construction of buildings, and I hope that my competitors also throw their hats into the arena of commerce and competition..."

The crowd went up in applause with various "hear! hear!'s" being shouted at random. It was decided then that the House would begin to improve economic conditions at home by focusing on commerce and immigration, however, the First Lord and all 40 members of the Domestic Council knew that there was still one more obstacle before obtaining final approval for the new Economic Bill.
