Firing on a 'Hole'
      #67780 - 07/25/03 06:15 AM (161.114.1.183)

I have been told by some folks with alot of experience to build some AC/20 towers and put them in holes in the map so as to force folks to take point blank shots from an AC/20. THis tower needs pretty good armour so that it forces the opponent to take multiple shots to kill the tower. The hope of course that the AC/20 tower hits a head or kills a leg or something like that.

My problem is that the minimum tower size to achieve this with any kind of armour is CF75 and CF100 is better. This is a level 3 (or 4 in the cf100 case). My thought is that a standard 'Hole' won't mask this tower. Example terrain like

.5 5
5 3 5
.5 5
Would certainly mask a standard vehicle, but if I throw a level 3 tower into the low spot, won't it "Stick up" above and allow folks to target it (perhaps with some soprt of partial cover).

Perhaps the way it works is that in order to fire, you must have LOS to the hex, but it doesn't seem to work that way against mechs, as many times I can fire upon a mech (the mech will have partial cover) when I could not have LOS to the hex it is in.

Does anyone here know how this stuff works, and be willing to explain it?

I think the hole has to be deeper for taller units. But it will give partial cover, which doesn't affect the vehicle crit table, and you get +3 to-hit.

I didn't know there was a bug? Can you elaborate? or is it an exploit you would rather not let out of the bag further.

big exploit, hence the answer I gave.

BTW the people how told you to do this are exploiting a bug and when it gets fixed (maybe it will) they will be worse off due to higher maintance on towers vs a ac20 vech.

Hrrrrrrmmm.

Well I won't ask anymore no matter how curious I am. I'll Buy VNG-A4's then for 'Hole' Duty. Damned expensive buggers they are though.

Hetzers are too easy to 'fake-out' on ai. In any case thanks

And the enemy has his favorite "tower killer" - OstScout - there. Another 7DP gone

Hmmm, the OTT-7J is the "tower finder" only. I usually kill them with other mechs, like my Griffons. Or if in a hole, something with lots of shots at crits, like a HBK.

you mean if i set my cicada with 3 range 5 power on a hill in the middle of a map (or the edge of a map) and just sit, it won't find a tower?

i thought that Stealth and ECM dice were rolled each turn, so it's possible that one is found on a bad roll.

Why do you need a ostcsout or a raven?

You don't HAVE to have them, they just have way better sensors than other mechs.

your cicada will be sitting there a long time, an ostscout takes two turns max to see everything in a zone.

If your serious about neveron and DP a little then spend the 7 bucks.
