Does this apply to vehicles in the armory as well, or only commissioned vehicles?

I read somewhere that all empires get some number of SP's free or something like. What's that all about?

yea, i think uncom'd vec SP is tonnage/100. (according to omt.asp calculator)

and you get 2500 "free" SP's (not 25000).

The 2500 "free" SPs are not "free", that's just how many you can have before you start incurring the fabled "OMT" or "oversized military tax".

Why are hover vehicles cheaper to maintain than wheeled vehicles?

Okay, I see. Tracked vehicles are cheaper. Strange.

Strange? Not really, track vehicles are robust and are workhorses. Wheeled vehicles are a bit more fragile, and as for hover. Well, If you think mantaining the advanced hover air skirts on a 35-50ton hover tank is cheap, think again.

Tracked vehicles are robust alright, but they're also a bear to maintain. Yeah, we do a lot of preventive care on our trucks in the light artillery, but I've spoken to the SP guys and they spend most of their time maintaining their tracks. I would've thought it would be (cheapest to most expensive) wheeled, tracked, hover.

Okay, think of it this way. Take your ordinary jeep. Then, place a few tons of armor, a giant Machine Gun Array or A huge rack or Short Range Missile Launchers or A Rack of Long Range Missile Launchers. The ability to have basic electronics for warfare as well has a good engine to carry 5 tons and still travel through terrain fast. Track vehicles, we have them today. Many are just stored in armories and when needed, put on a bit of oil, a bit of cleaing, power it up and you ready to go. Track vehicles are supposed to be hard to damage or malfunction unless some weapon hits it and hits it hard!

Perhaps, but that just hasn't been my experience (or the experience of the other soldiers I've talked to). I mean, an Avenger ("Jeep" with missiles and electronics) takes less maintenance than an Abrams or a Paladin. It may not be the way the game looks at it, but that's the reality of it.

An Abrams is a much more complex machine than any jeep, that's why it is harder to maintain despite its tracks. You have to consider other factors such as vehicle weight. A 40 or 50 ton tracked vehicle will obviously cost more to maintain than a 5 ton jeep, more than even a 5 ton hovercraft.

So we need to compare wheeled vehicles vs. tracked vehicles of similar weight.

M113 APC (10 ton, tracked) vs. M36A1 Truck (6 ton, wheeled) or M246 Truck (22 ton, wheeled)

Again, I'm guessing the APC takes more to maintain than either truck. But, I just send the vehicles to the shop, I don't work there...

Ok, after you hit 2500, you are stuck paying OMT regardless of your population size, or does population size matter at all? And if not, why does it seem to be factored into the calculation on the OMT calculator?

ignore most of what is written here, this post is very very old the omt calculator is old as well and neither have been updated.

You no longeg get the "free" 2500 SP and are immedietly subject to receiveing omt if your SP for your units is more than generated by your population.

so then how much SP does the population make? 1:1 with BV?

1/100 sp/pop for over 250.000 pop IIRC, lower it is 50sp+1/x sp/pop, with x linear between 50 and 100. It's in the help files anyway.

Does anyone have the most recent formula? I know this one is off, so I'm not even going to share the ridiculous results it gives me. I'm trying to do some planning and would like to avoid OMT. Thanks.

I use the formula in the help files and it works pretty well.
