In discussion in the thread, "Shouldn't Mech Technology be More Advanced?," the topic of flammable methane atmospheres came up (hello, thread drift), and I proposed that large releases of methane from "methane calthrates" (oops: that should be "clathrate") on a seafloor would produce the desired large-scale fire balls. That reminded me of a planet ravaged by the Jihad (I provided some suggestions for the write-up), where just this sort of thing occurred. Most of the damage to the planet was by greenhouse warming rather than methane flames, but the planet met (more or less) what tgsofgc was looking for.
The nice thing about the story behind this particular planet is that WoB got its ass kicked there.
The planet is "Kansu" in "Prefecture V":
Interactive Map Maybe this'll work: Kansu
It's also a picture of an environmental risk that Earth faces. Earth's oceans have large quantities of methane calthrates, and some scientists fear that they could generate a large release of methane (with associated greenhouse warming) due to a large seaquake or underwater nuke.
