Part 9: A woman from Talics Past: 2

The air inside the command vehicle was cool and the light gentle. But the sudden change from outside to inside rendered Josephine near blind and she had to squint again to find her way around. Esau had motioned to a chair for her to sit in and she did without protest. The two other men who had been with Esau followed behind but it was still to dark to see their features, although one seemed to be wearing a large brimmed hat set back on his head. Josephine looked around the interior but still couldn’t see much, the monitors threw off a greenish light that didn’t lend to her vision and it would be a moment before her eyes adjusted. One of the other men sat down and from what she could tell was opening a bottle of some kind. She searched for the other man, but she was interrupted by Esau.
“Madame, I’m not entirely sure who you are, or what exactly happened to bring you here, and I am truly very curious to find out, however, for the time being I know that you and your men are tired and need some rest. Therefore, I extend an invitation to you to spend the next few days here, we will repair your vehicles and tend to your wounded.” Esau was sitting across from her in a high backed chair leaning back with his hands in a steeple under his chin. His eyes focused directly on her
“I thank-you for your hospitality, but I am confused as to why you chose to help us and not our attackers, or simply leave us to our own devises?” Josephine leaned forward and crossed her arms on the table. Her eyes had completely adjusted now and she could make out the features of one of the other men. He was young with shoulder length hair, a days growth on his face and a brown bottle locked in his hand. His eyes shifted between Esau and her, nothing about him seemed suspicious, aside from the occasional look he would throw over his shoulder to another, hidden thing.
“We don’t like bullies here, and we don’t like fights spilling over into our land. That for me was more than enough reason to get involved. Sounds noble doesn’t it?” Esau smiled and let his body language show that it was the best he could come up with.
Talic glanced over quickly and confirmed the fact that she couldn’t see him. He wondered how much longer the banter would continue before he could get away. His stomach was in knots and his mind raced. He didn’t want to know if she still remembered him, he hated his past enough not to have more of it brought back.
“Talic,” Esau said turning in his chair. Exposing Talic to Josephine.
“Talic?” She said with surprise in her voice. “Talic Pride?” Talics body tensed, and his stomach clenched. His heart skipped a beat and his mind started to race. [censored]! He thought.
“Yeah, he’s my chief field commander.” Esau said pointing his thumb at him. “And this is Jim Dinkins, my operations...” Esau’s voice trailed off as he watched Josephine get up and walk past him toward Talic.
Talic had his eyes clenched shut and every muscle in his body clenched and ready. This was not something that he had ever wanted to have happen to him again. Why in the name of anything would she have to be the one, anybody, Chester LaPointe himself would have been a more welcome sight right now.
Esau cleared his throat began to speak again. “Madam Josephine, you know this man?” Esau seemed confused and slightly alarmed. Talic had never spoken of his past and Esau had simply assumed that it was because everybody in it was dead.
“Yes I know him, I know him very well,” She didn’t look at Esau and continued. “Talic ‘Blue Moon’ Pride.” She stood there, staring at him with her deep black eyes. The sound of her voice was both loving and cold at the same time.
Jim looked at Esau who could only shrug. He looked back at Talic who slowly stood up to his full height, watched as he took a deep breath and then, very slowly turned to face her. Esau was shocked by what he saw. He had only seen that look a few times before and every time he did bad things happened.
“Josey, I don’t know why you’re here, or what you expect to find. But the Talic that you know is dead.” Talics face was blank, no emotion could be detected. His eyes where empty black holes as if there was no light escaping. Inside Talic was exploding and fighting a civil war within himself. Half of him wanted to grab her, embrace and kiss the only woman he had ever loved, and other wanted to chase her out of the empire with every Mech they had on her tail. As a consequence, he did nothing.
Josephine looked at him, the hurt in her face was apparent, but it quickly faded and was replaced with a look that could bend steel. She became hostile at once. “Who do you think you are?” She shot back at him angrily. Snapped her head toward Esau she started. “Do you know that you employ an known killer, a man who has personally ordered and taken part in the slaughter of innocent people? A man who was as well known for his dishonesty as for his brutality?!” She was shouting at this point and Esau had had enough.
“Settle down, right now. I won’t have this. Not here, not ever. Talic, head back to the barracks, I’ll talk to you later. As for you Madam, we will continue this discussion when you have relaxed some. We aren’t going to get anywhere right now.” Esau was pissed. I didn’t know why she was so angry with Talic, but he was putting his money on jilted lover, and it wouldn’t help if they where both in the room. “Tell your men that I will have quarters prepared for them soon and we will continue this later. Now, please, if you mind, I need to get back to my command, I have other business to finish today.” With that, he dismissed her.
Josephine glared at Esau but said nothing, she straitened her uniform, turned on her heal and exited the vehicle. The heavy door slammed shut and there was silence in the room.

Mmm...chasing a group of tanks off with every mech in that empire would certainly not be hard, methinks. Though, I still want to know more about this whole "brutal slayer of innocent" thing, so I humbly request she sticks around and makes Talic's life hellish until we get to hear more. Good post btw. Oh, and yes...eyes can take that long to adjust. Just one peek into the daylight and I'm blind for hours..
