Preplacing Units for Attacking?
      #92112 - 05/25/04 10:15 PM (24.19.208.95)

I recently lost a unit when I probed with a lance and one unit was surrounded by terrain that was 2 levels higher. As a result I could not retreat with all of my lance and the results were predictable. I filed a Bug Report and got the following response from Randy:

Quote:

Hi. That is a very interesting scenario you describe. And very rare. If you notice that a zone is "extremely treacherous" or "heavily wooded" there is a high likelihood that sending in a vehicle lance will result in 1 of the units being unable to move from its initial spot. While a single unit will always begin on the edge, lances begin in a row up to 4 hexes into the zone and are thus subject to this problem. The safest thing to do is to preplace your units before an attack to see what the edge terrain looks like and ensure that you begin where you choose to.

I know how to preplace for defense, how do I preplace if I am attacking?

He doesn't mention that preplacing for an attack only works right maybe 25% of the time if your lucky.

Ok, go to the main map .

Click on the zone your units are in , the ones you want to attack with and are already mobilized.

On the right hand side of the page where you see the owner of the zone and the details Elevation - Woods etc , scroll down to where you will see

You have mobilized units in this zone. To set their attack formation click the letter corresponding to the planned attack direction. N | S | E | W

Click the direction you want to attack in and a partial map of the zone to be attacked will load , it will show you the 4 rows ( or columns ) of hexes of the zone you are going to attack and as per placing defensive units a list of mobilized units for you to pre place .

Eg if you wanted to attack to the east , you would get the 4 hex columns on the western side of the to be attacked zone etc. That way you can see the terrain and buildings and plan where to place your units . Not sure if you see any defenders if they are in these hexes , I suppose you would .

Place your units, save their positions, hit the return to map button, click the zone to be attacked and hopefully your units will be in their preplaced positions during the attack.

As stated it sometimes fails, a single unit of a lance can be halfway across the map from the others or even on the direct other side of the map, eg I once attacked from the west and I was teleported to the east !

That's exactly right. Be very careful about preplacement at the moment, because it often does not work. You can spend all day figuring out the ideal starting locations for your units but the minute you enter battle... damn... your crap is all over the place.

Hopefully WS and Randy will figure this one out soon.
