I have been told that I should see the messages, but the place where I am told they should be remains blank. Try exiting the battle screen, then reentering and hitting refresh a few times. I think I also discovered why it happens. I noticed that when I couldn't see any hit/miss messages, it was when I was flipping thru several different windows. Multi-tasking, as it were.
